I have a fantasy of being able to use an LCD Dell monitor with my SGI systems that have granite skins. With 3d printer technology now, it seems this may not be as hard as I thought years ago. I have granite monitors, external drives, keyboards, etc.... Did they paint them with bits of different colored plastic to give it that look and texture? Is this something that could be replicated?

Anyway, just thought I would throw that out there and see if anyone else had thought about that. I love the granite look. Using an SGI without a granite display just isn't the same.

Would it be easy to print the granite colour with a 3D printer?

A powder printer may be able to do it, but I wonder if it would be able to print the texture though?

Yea, that is what I am wondering. I am sure it would be easy to disassemble the LCD, take the plastic skins and scan them. Make some modifications for the sgi cube logo recess in the proper place. Print them out and then paint them. If they did use some sort of mixture, then that is the secret. I wonder if anyone out there has this info.

What if you sprayed the monitor bezel with granite/stone texture spray paint? Krylon and Rust-Oleum make some that are quite close in colour.

I took apart my brand new 27" BenQ Zowie FP monitor and removed the plastic skins and painted everything 'granit grey' which is not a stone paint, just a light grey (slightly) darker than the SGI Granite. I had the SGI cube logo from my old Indigo 2. The SIG cube logo on the I2 was in 2 parts. The silver Cube logo was attached to a back plastic backer. the Silver logo was held on to the backer by 8 or 10 pins that were push fit onto the backer. I used a razor to lift the silver cube logo from the backer. I used the plastic backer as a jig to drill the 8 or 10 (cant recall how many) holes into the front monitor bezel. I then printed my own 'Silicon Graphics" logo text using Testors clear waterslide decals and placed them on the bezel. I then used flat clear cover over the entire bezel to protect the decals and paint. Then I just pushed the silver cube logo into the holes (snapped in) and wholla!! I have a good homage SGI monitor. I will get some photos tonight. stay tuned.

I do have to say that my Wife thought I was crazy when I had the monitor taken apart 6 min after arriving home from the store. I took a risk and accepted that fact that if I screw up, I have no one to blame but myself.
