RE: O2 or Octane/Octane 2?
So, I recently updated my O2 to effective silence.
It's a 300mhz RM5200. No internal HDD, running an external SCSI2SD plugged in to the 68pin SCSI cable to minimize internal heat. Replaced the fan with a Noctua NF-A8. Literally can't hear the thing running next to my on my desk. Generates next to no heat, and eats up ~94w of power, including the FPA and 1600SW so I just leave it up and running 24/7 (drops to under 80w when the 1600sw goes to sleep).

RE: O2 or Octane/Octane 2?
The HD in my O2 is now by far the noisiest bit of kit. I've even considered trying a 7200rpm drive, though seeing they are generally older they may make just as much noise. Currently running a Fujitsu 36GB 15K drive.

RE: O2 or Octane/Octane 2?
I ditched the 15k rpm drive not for the noise, but for the heat. Those suckers get HOT and I didn't feel comfortable with the lower fan pressure from the Noctua with it in there (the heat felt radiating out the back was notably hotter).

Hmmm, true. I've got two 'Worldisk' drives, one is defo a Fujitsu, not sure about the other. The known Fujitsu is 36.7GB 15K and the other is 36GB 15k. The Fujitsu model nunber ends in 'S' while the other is 'U'. The U drive (non Fujitsu) runs significantly cooler!
