O2 or Octane/Octane 2? - Mario9501 - 07-11-2020

Hello folks I am wondering which one I should get as I am going to stop vintage computer collecting for a while and I am wondering which one I should get as I want to get one that is a reasonable price as it is going to be my last one. Thanks.

The Octane is definitely the more robust machine and you'll more than likely be able to pick up a more powerful Octane than an O2 for a similar price!

That being said, if you're located in Italy, then there's a very good example of an O2 on sale on eBay at this moment! (It doesn't have long to go though, so you'll have to be quick if you're interested!)

I live in the USA so I wouldn't be able to get the machine. But you are right about the Octain being better.

The O2 is actually more fun to play with ... at least if you like video and such. And it's lighter and quieter and has lots of other nice features.

But I will never buy another one because they are too unreliable.

Okay, for $200 I would, but you get the idea :-)

O2 wins on noise, heat, power consumption, and ease-of-introduction (VGA for video for example). I have both and am currently working on upgrading my O2 to start using it regularly over my Octane2 due to the heat piece - it gets so toasty in my office. The O2 is also far "cuter" if that matters at all haha.

That said, I'm crazy and insist on my SGI as a daily driver so-to-speak rather than a trip-down-retrocomputing-memory-lane. If you just want a cool machine that's "different" from what's out there on the PC side, the Octane fits that much better. It'll take more ram, be more powerful, supports better graphics, etc. etc. etc. And it does a wonderful job as doubling as a medicine ball for working out / dead-lifting.

Well I was thinking of getting a Octain with a R10000 @175 MHz with 512MB of Ram with a SE+TEX for around $600 with shipping. I am getting it from Ian's SGI Depo.

> Octain

It's Octane. Like the octane rating on a car. Bullets and Octane. Octane the car magazine.

I personally blame my phone for auto correct.

I agree that if near silence and power consumption are important to you.  O2 for sure.  I have a Noctua in mine as well as a very quiet disk and I barely hear it.  And it sits on my desk.  But they are a bit fragile compared to some of the other machines.  I miss my Ocante2 somewhat but I just couldn't take the noise anymore and the heat output.  But very happy with the O2 as I don't do much heavy lifting anymore with these machines anyway.
