I have not yet been able to pull a copy of the SGI firmware from the FireGL X1 cards

Necroing this thread... the firmware and flash tool is on the Onyx 4 install. There's the latest firmware for the X1 (9700, AFAIK) and two versions of the X2. I made notes about flashing these, I'll dig the notes out next week.
