RE: Video error on boot? Fuel
Boy, you can tell my focus is on the older machines. So used to the 9600 8-n-1 settings.

Thanks for chiming in hamei and Trippynet! (I'm learning too! hah)

Well, finally got a serial connection set up, it does work at 9600.8.N.1

I get this, and it chokes when walking SCSI Adaptor 1, anyone know how to remedy this??

It should eventually give up and continue. Sometimes it takes a long time.  You can set the console to any speed you want in the prom environment, if it continues to hang walking the scsi chain you may want to do an < enableall > and < resetenv > from the prom ... when it finally gets to the 5  choices (install software, start machine , rescue, go to command line and single user) choose "command line" then reset everything to original and enable everything so it can be rediscovered.

For fun, when done you can boot from there, < boot -f sash > then from the sash < boot -f dksc(0,1,0)/unix >, kind of a good thing to pick up in case some day you need to get in without graphics. (Like to reset the resolution to something the monitor can handle, not that I've ever had to do that mind you ...)

Also the prom command line will show you if the disk is a boot disk or an option disk, a straight < ls >  will display the volume header and the sash if they are setup as a boot disk, no sash for an option disk.

But you have to get past walking ths scsi chain first, try waiting a long time. I think the channel two in a Fuel is the 50 pin chain, is the cdrom on that in your box ? If so, could be a termination issue or the cdrom does not have its id set. Check those and try pulling the cable .... you dont need the cdrom to boot, if the disk is already setup.

Oh, I've had problems with old stiff cracked cables, too. Seems to me the main Fuel scsi cable is not so geat, I had a bunch of goofy problems until replacing that one with a nice new flexible $40 silicone one. $40 for a cable ! but it worked. The end fitting on that cable is abnormal, it's smaller than usual and a bitch to find. Typical SGI, stewpid. The channel two one is just a normal one, luckily.

I'd say that's the problem. Fuel is a picky machine and it uses the same LED error code on the light bar for failed graphics and for a keyboard/mouse error. I have seen my own Fuel fail to boot before now due to the keyboard connector being loose.

Making progress.... Installed an internal DAT drive, now I get all the way to the screen flashing for a sec then quits.. Have another monitor on the way, an old Dell that supports SOG, so perhaps that will be the final solution to the problem.

Sorry, this will be sort of a muddle since quoting is a bit of a bitch in this editor and I'm lazy today ...

First off, you MUST fix the scsi address problem. Your DAT drive is overpoewring everything else on the chain so the prom won't be able to find the boot disk. Your boot disk will be 1.

Most likely an address problem, there will be a jumper on the drive you need to set. Try 4 maybe, CDROM's are commonly six. No need for that convention but doesn't hurt to stick with it.

When you get to where you discover every device on the chain, then you are set for the next step.

That prom set of 5 choices ? It won't work right now because it can't find the boot disk. I mean, it'll work for choice 5, you can get a command prompt but that's the only one. And it's just a prom command prompt, not a system one. Very limited.

There's two lines in there I don't like, the "oversubscribed graphics" lines. Looks like graphics are set to a color depth that you do't have enough memory for. It's possibble that even when you get the scsi chain correct and it tries to boot to Irix, you won't get a screen. To fix that have to go into single from that prom menu and then /usr/gfx/setmon 1280x1024_60 or some lower res just to get into the graphical mode. Once you can see what you are doing, then xsetmon will be easier to use.

Trippy, doesn't the Fuel go to console if you don't have a keyboard and mouse attached ?

First, fix the scsi chain. That's imperative. Nothing will work until you do.

RE: Video error on boot? Fuel
Mine doesn't. Had an issue a few weeks back with it, flashing red and white LED. Checked all the cables, all secure - still did the same. Dismantled it, re-seated everything, still red/white flashing LED.

Then I realised the PS/2 connector for the keyboard had partially come out of my KVM. Plugged it back in and the Fuel booted fine.

But in short, no mine wouldn't boot to the console without the keyboard being attached, although it is of course possible there's an L1 flag to override this perhaps?
