RE: Your Video Game Console Sucks
Reviving this because it was fun and I'm bored:
3DO
ARM, but not good ARM. Quads, but hard to program for. C++, but CFront-era C++. 3D, but affine 3D. The 3DO is a slow, sluggish system that while possessing some fun games, suffers from a lot of technology that wasn't ready for primetime. Look at Doom. Rebecca, the one programmer for it, basically worked nonstop for something like 12 weeks, and it still ran like shit. The licensors for 3DO shit were incompetent and 3DO as a company was bad model because they sold consoles at a profit, not a loss, due to licensing for electronics companies like Panasonic, Goldstar, etc. building it. Bad idea.
Sega CD
A slightly faster Genesis CPU and some extra hardware, but you get load times? You get unreliable hardware? You get a constrained bus talking to the main 68000 CPU? Walking box of contradictions. It also could never be sold as its own thing which, like the 32X, limited its adoption and cost reduction potential. A lot.
Atari Jaguar
64 bits? Bull. Bull Fucking Shit. It's a 68000 32/16 bit CPU, with two 32-bit RISC coprocessors and a few other helper chips. It's not 64-bit, the RAM, CPU, coprocessors, DSPs etc. aren't 64-bit. They also hamstringed themselves. Not enough cache for each coprocessor. Memory access arbitrated by the 68000, which is slower than the two coprocessors. Difficult to use documentation and SDKs. Undocumented bugs.
You know why Doom for the Jaguar is loved? Well, it's a lie. The only reason it ran as well as it did was John Carmack did the port, and he sacrificed the music. You can't have the music and the game at the same time because Jerry is responsible for both matrix ops and sound processing. It makes sense technically speaking, but it's not exactly effective here. The Doom levels are simplified, sounds are downsampled and pitched a few steps down, the spectre is gone etc.
The Jaguar's most games aren't great. Unless you like Green Knockoff Cortana saying "WHERE DID YOU LEARN TO FLY?" when you ram into things. Oh, and the ISAs of Tom and Jerry aren't compatible. Similar to another infamous console...
