Octane resurrection: checklist

Mr Hamei, when last did you look up the skirts of an R10K O2 pimm!? Smile There's no way you're getting the CPU pad on the heatsink onto a flat surface...!

I recall the Octane is the same, not so much for the R5K O2 or the MGRAS / VPRO gfz cards though, I believe they are flat bottomed.

Milling machine to knock the edges of that casting down Smile

I never had an R10k O2 tho, always thought the r5k was a better deal for an O2.  How about in general it's nice to make mating surfaces really flat with some 600 grit on a piece of glass ? Smile

If'n I did have an r12k O2 I'd probably mill that whole thing flat then surface it ... that tape shit is icky.  And probably swap out the aluminum for copper, too.

How about we just fill the thing with a nonconductive oil and pump that heat into the fish tank ?

The R10K/R12k heatsink with it's poxy noisy fan on top deserves an award for stupidest heat dissipating device ever.

Oh I always flat off my heatsinks, even if buy a new one. I go to 800 wet grit, if I'm feeling adventurous I'll flat off the lid on the CPU as well. Did that on an old FX-6300 and managed to squeeze 4 degrees C out of it. Also gave an old pair of Xeons the treatment, only got 2 deg C out of those extra but the lids on those were pretty poor.
