'rinikus - beg to differ.  This guy's ideas are stupid, everything he's doing can be done easier, faster and more intuitively with a Spaceball or Spacemouse. They've been around for decades ! They are also better because you don't need two hands, you can use one hand on the ball and the other on the cursor to pick out features.

This is like reinventing the wheel, except making it square.

If you don't have one, get yourself a space ball.  I believe even with a Tezzer you'll have to get the serial version, but that's okay, works exactly the same.

That'd be a nice project, by the way - a usb spaceball driver. They already exist for Loonix so should be somewhat feasible.

I've got one you can have for shipping but - ha ha, here's the catch ! - it's USB. The stuff is out there to make a USB driver for Irix, maybe you can entice someone to help ? Or dig in yourself and figure it out ? Not a simple job I think but hey, it's just 0's and 1's Smile

RE: The future of design
I've got one of these things:

It's an original serial SpaceMouse. I use it on the Octane sometimes, I think it's plug and play. I don't use it enough to remember what the buttons on top are for Wink  I have another one somewhere in beige, but this one fits better with the granite / charcoal peripherals.

I also have a set of dials and buttons, I think those were supposed to go with the older 4D systems. Not used so far.

Those are much more modern that I'm used to seeing on SGIs.  I have this spaceball:

There were (at least) two generations of dial & button boxes.  Old 4D style:

(All photos shamelessly stolen from ebay auction listings.)

I recently acquired a new-style set for my Octane.  So far they seem pretty neat.
