A social credit system linked to online social platforms that is mandatory would suck. Would I be forced to participate? Would there be a law or would it be like you can't get a credit card or a drivers license unless you also have that other stuff. Why can't I just be left alone? How is paying over 60,000 dollars US not enough (with nothing in return) and not paying my fair share? Just like the Obama care stuff in the USA, what if I just don't want any part of the medical system and don't want to buy insurance... How is the government able to say that it is related to taxes and I am now obligated to pay for something I don't want or need? Is China not linking all of these things together and denying people travel and other things based on debts and other things the communist party deems as a negative in society? I don't know the details, only what my wife has talked about (she is from over near there). The government of the USA is so jealous of the CCP, that is exactly what they want here. Monolithic authoritarian single party control and a quasi central bank controlled "free" market.

I used to love the internet in the mid to late 90s. Early 2000s was okay and when youtube came out it was cool. It has been a slow downward spiral in my opinion. This will be my last smart phone, I am going back to a removable battery crap phone to just make calls soon. I am opting out of this nonsense. I used to be a people person when I was in my teens, very social... 25+ years in IT has sucked that from my soul and stomped it out. I am not paid for what I know or what I can do, I am paid to think so others don't have to.

on a side note, will someone PM me what happened? I am curious to know what went down.

I read that whole thread. I am also a sysadmin and not a developer. I would have thought that if GCC was the better choice, nekoware would have been built with it. How about this is an IRIX forum and we just choose to use the MP compiler for the hell of it? Why does there even need to be a debate? One of the things I love about keeping these old machines running is playing with the compilers and learning C. If I wanted to use GCC, I would use a different box. To me, using GCC over MP is like taking a classic Porsche 911 and doing an engine swap with an LS Chevy motor. Even if it makes the car go faster, that isn't always the point (not saying gcc would make it go faster.)

Will they also be porting systemd to IRIX? Smile

RE: Announcement: I'm stepping away for a month.
It's been a fairly large ideological divide for some time. I certainly don't want to disparage the work of the developers over at SGUG. They've been able to do some very impressive things. IRIX installs would be a lot more painful without Unxmaal's Booterizer project, for example. Bringing RPM to IRIX machines and just being able to get newer software to compile at all is wonderful.

My concern about that approach is how much of the community will be able to take good advantage of it. How long are packages going to take to install on an Indigo2 or an Indy, for example? It's a heavier stack than these machines were intended for and something might have to give. The team there is aware of that concern, though, and I hope they'll find good ways to deal with any hurdles.

There's nothing wrong with people investigating different approaches and putting them head to head. There's nothing wrong with people asking questions and arguing about differing methodologies. Hopefully, by exploring different options for future IRIX software development, we'll find approaches that are demonstrably faster, easier, better, etc. for specific cases. IRIX runs on systems spanning a pretty considerable range of time. While they're all MIPS systems, each system has a variety of its own quirks and configurations. Expecting any approach to be one-size-fits-all is likely going to leave you disappointed.

...all of that said, the line needs to be drawn at personal attacks. I don't care what Person X thinks of Person Y's politics or ideologies. Yeah, you're going to get some discussion along those lines in any community. As long as that discussion is civil, it's all good. We're here for the computers, though. That's the central draw. That's the point. SGUG's first "rule" is "Be excellent to each other." We, as an entire community, need to actually, like, do that. Most of us seem to manage. Hopefully we can help the rest to get there. If not, we'll have to politely ask them to leave. And then ban them if that fails, I guess.

S'pose I shoulda just shut up because the subject is vast ... too vast to cover in the time I have left Smile

There are definitely bad ... no, 'things I don't like' about China. But there's plenty of 'things I don't like' about the US, too Smile

The thing is, the crap let me reiterate that crap I read in the western press makes me puke. They don't have and don't care to have a clue. They are writing to their own audience (you guys) and creating a bogeyman that doesn't exist. Now, China may be a bogeyman. It isn't to me, but may be to some people. But it certainly is not the bogeyman they describe. I have more freedom here than I did in the US.

Just a few moments ago I was reading something online, and across the bottom in all those advertising-related links they jam down your throat these days was a headline  "Xi Jinping engaging in his favorite hobby, crushing dissent !" article. Now, how the fuck do they know what Xi Jinping's favorite hobby is ? I mean, seriously.

C'mon. This is so fucking stupid I want to scream. These dipshits don't live in China, they have no fucking idea what really goes on, their collective IQ might reach ten which they have demonstrated about 30,000 times, it's pure garbage. Every once in a while I will trip over some article that is percipient. The rest of the time it's some mentally-retarded McCarthyite drunken fantasy. 90% of what the press writes about China is pure shit.

For an excellent example, this virus. We first heard about it in the middle of January, at least here in Shang. Apparently the municipal people of Wuhan screwed up at the end of December and didn't want to believe that this really was a new and dangerous virus. People do make mistakes, you know ? When they did figure it out, they said "holy shit" and went on teevee and explained what was happening with video of people dying and the desperate state Wuhan was in and guess what ? We didn't want to die ! We stayed home for three weeks ! The virus takes two weeks to incubate, so in three weeks you have separated the population ito haves and have-nots. Simple.

What did I read in the US press and on a US-based forum I used to read ? "Draconian measures, Communist Party this, Communist Party that, trampling the rights of citizens to enforce their totalitarian grip on the country ! Deceitful data, this is all just a plot to weaken the US economy, it's not that bad, just a hysteria over the flu !"

First off, during the entire three weeks we had to stay home (exept for groceries), I didn't see one cop or army guy or any form of force. Becasue they explained it, we stayed home. Free clue for dipshit writers at API and the NY Times -- most people don't want to die.

So we got through it and three weeks later wwe were done and loked bad, 80,000 cases and 4,000 people dead, ouch black eye but ... China did good, WHO came, I still have the link to Aylward's report, he touched on everything important and exactly what was necessary. I thouoght he was a touch optimistic but overall, it was quite accurate. Here

This is pretty much what happened. i live here. In fact, I was travelling around a little during this mess because of spring festival and also because I don't really care, so I can say from personal observation and have photos to back it up that this report is decent.

What did the US do ? Trumplestiltskin made a total fool of himself, did nothing, sneered at the Communist Party and draconian measures and stopped Chinese peopel from entering the country but did nothing about citizens ... smart man, viruses don't liek white guys ? so that now, a couple months later, the oh-so-mart US has over a million cases and 60,000 deaths last time I looked ? Well that's certainly a great performance !!

So now what does that assbreath do ? Yeah. Blame the World Health Organization. Like, what were they supposed to do ? Tie the son of a bitch up, duct tape his mouth, and run the US from their eyrie high above Lake Cuyahoga ? Fuck.

Sure, there are things to not like about China. But the sheer political stupiidty and incompetence of the US overshadows anything the evil commies could even conceive of.

So, this propaganda crap ? I just try to ignore it, just makes me upset that people can be so farking stupid. You've got eyes, people. Open them. The emperor has not clothes and he's a liar.

In fact, the best description I have heard anywhere came from Ozztralia - "the US is a senile bull elephant in must" ...

About this "social value" stuff, it's about the same as seller feedback on fleabay or clicking "like" on forum posts or any of ten thousand other goofy things that the youth of today engages in. No one I know pays any attention to that stuff, and most people I know have backed away from Wechat to some extent. At first that stuff is like "Oh goody, I'll show everyone what my cat ate for breakfast ! It's so cute !" but then people with sense grow shame and the rest continue on to become social justice warriors, or whatever.  Like the soccer moms that enter their kids in piano, painting, ballet, soccer, Young Americans for Freedom, volunteer work at the spca, helping old ladies across the street, and general extra-curricular brown-nosing. They think that will get their kids into a better school, or make selling on taobao easier, or some other wishful thinking. None of us with sense believe any of that shit, so it's doomed to failure, and we mostly know it Smile

Do you want to know who the real enemy of most people is ? It's not Xi Jinping. It's HR. If you added up the IQ of every one of those fucking morons, you'd have a hard time breaking into double digits.  Chinese people are eminently practical. They do not especially give a crap if Mr Xi is president for life or two years or whether he dies his hair or not (90% chance he does, everyone really wants the black hair dye concession in downtown Beijing), or whether they have "the right" to make scurrilous comments in public or whether they can spin around naked on Nanjing Lu like sufi dancers.

btw, I used to get annoyed at the press restrictions, the great firewall is a pain in the ass but when I read some of the sheer stinking garbage the US press puts online, I have to rethink that position. a responsible free press is a great thing, but one that prints any old rumors they can think up, much less so :(

Anyhoo Chinese people all have children or grandchildren, what they care about is getting them a good education so they can get good jobs. None of the crap the western press fixates upon has any meaning here whatsoever. What people are concerned about is getting the best school starting at kindergarten, the best gaokao score, to get into the best university, so they can get the best certificate, to get past the bloody imbeciles handing out the good jobs. The education itself is meaningless, it's getting the job that counts.

And that's a fact Smile

Back to the original subject, that starting post was pure crap. Rayon, cool your jets, we all know the guy is a turd. The subject, whether gcc is lovely or not, is irrelevant. The behavior, well ... oming here to specifically spout that trollish garbage deserves instand removal of the thread. It's nothing to get upset about. The guy's a loser.

The subject itself is silly. I looked over there. They have done nothing. It's the same old gtk2 gtk3 "code cleanup" refactoring toolkit-changing "modern tools" self-abuse as always. No one gives a damn about that stuff. People want programs.

Most people do not buy a car to change the oil. Some people do, fine, I'm happy for them. But most of us buy a car to go somewhere. So if those dipshits were spending their time making actual programs work, I'd have a lot more respect for them. But the only one I saw running was a motif terminal that even I built ten years ago ... with Mipspro. I mean, 'cmon. If these guys are going to puff up their chests and crow at the world how great they are, then do something worthwhile.

A circle jerk might be fun for the participants but it's not that exciting as a spectator sport.

Making a specific trip here just to scream how great your are ... well, it worked for Ali. But then, he put his money where his mouth was. I'm still waiting to see anything useful out of whatever-his-name-is.

Hamei, enough with the "I hate the US", a bunch of us live here and actually really enjoy it. Can we please get back to you know, computers and stuff? This thread has turned into the thing that y'all are complaining about on other sites.

Now, if you'll excuse me i'm off to clean my AR's, change the oil in my Porsche, and BBQ some meat.

Here's the deal - you keep your mouth shut about China and I'll keep my mouth shut about the US.

But you just can't do that, can you ?

btw, Porsche is built in Germany.

Please search all of my posts, I've never said anything about China, so I'm not sure the need for a threat. Of course, Porsche is from Germany, I know this because I picked up my GT3 there and had it shipped back to the US.
