Typical systems from the IRIX 5.3 days didn't have more than 1 .. 4GB of disk space. Also it's possible to e.g. split an 18GB disk into three EFS partitions, for /, /usr/people and /usr/local for example to work around the EFS limitations.

what bugs do you think of?
There are the usual patch kits, which should be applied anyway. I never noticed any problems with XFS on 5.3, even on the bigger machines. The largest box I had 5.3+xfs running on was an 8 cpu Challenge. I never saw bugs there.

RE: Irix 5.3 install question
Don't have links to bug messages handy -- it was a sentiment I remember from usenet discussion at the time. I know some of the bugs were bad enough to cause a change of the XFS on-disk format which means you can't access a disk when you boot from the OS disk after applying the recommended/required patch kit.
