IRIX 5.3 for Indigo2 R4400 250MHz non-IMPACT

RE: IRIX 5.3 for Indigo2 R4400 250MHz non-IMPACT
What on earth can you run in 5.3 that's actually useful or remotely interesting for that matter!!!

I ran up my Indy 4000 200MHz yesterday and and the only word I have to describe my experience is PAINFUL!!! (These machines are retardedly slow!!! )

They may run better with 5.3 installed, but in that case, what can you actually use them for?

First of all, a ton of software by SGI themselves will run, for example you don't need to keep using the development tools from the IDO 5.3 disc when ProDev WorksShop 2.6.4 will run on IRIX 5.3. For the record: the very last version ever was 2.9.4

A quick look on my server comes up with these 3rd party applications, but there has to be much more:

Adobe Reader / FrameMaker / Illustrator / PhotoShop / Premiere
Alias|Wavefront up to version 8.1 or so
AutoCAD
Avid Eddie
Barco Creator
CorelDRAW
Discreet (older versions)
HyperChem
Insignia SoftWindows (older versions)
Kai's PowerTools
KAI C++ compiler
Netscape
Lightwave 5.0
Nintendo N64 development tools
ProEngineer R17 (I think)
SoftImage
WordPerfect
Xoas Pandemonium & TV Tools

(don't pin me down on each and every one of them).

You know, supporting the MIPS/IRIX platform cost money back then too. So unless your application was something tied to a specific platform it made a lot of sense to support the widest range of potential MIPS/IRIX customers. That's why a lot of the above are generic productivity applications.

Oh, did I mention that IRIX 5.3 runs much faster than IRIX 6.5?

Just to mention, I'm trying to install this on my I2 not my Indy. I only tested the disc on my Indy earlier because it was slightly more convenient to get hooked up.

My WebForce Indy is an R4400@200MHz with XZ graphics. It only has 128MB of RAM installed though. What was the max spec for the WebForce release of the Indy?

Maybe I should install 5.3 on my system, as it's currently running terribly!

Same as any other Indy -- R5000SC@180MHz, 256MB RAM. XZ has some hardware acceleration but with the R5K CPU the XL24 graphics are actually faster at most types of work. So you could argue that max spec for an Indy R5K is XL24 and for Indy R4400 is XZ.

Webforce was a software bundle deal, you got a Netscape WWW server + some authoring tools. The idea was to provide an easy all in one package to create a website and host it as well. And you got the badge, of course ;-)

Sweet! Thanks for that link Jan-jaap! I remember having the real marketing material but now lost to time. That is a rare treat. I am going for the R4400 version running 5.3. I have XZ graphics but using just the XL24 and the set engineering 100mbit card. I am only missing a couple of webforce badges for my Indy and ChallengeS. It appears that no one has any to sell. If anyone has any they are willing to part with, let me know! If I can get one, I am going to get my brother to create a model of it and replicate new versions. Perhaps in different colors.
