Lightbar LED + King Midas unlucky cousin
Ah...retro workstations, almost everything I tried yesterday didn't work. I was working on getting the SCSI2SD to work with the Octane. I tried many jumper, termination settings both physical and in SCSI2SD but no luck. I read somewhere that someone is doing it so I will have to dig around. While I was trying that my light bar bulbs burned out. I do have tiny "grain-of-wheat" bulbs, but a quick test showed they get somewhere between really warm and hot. So, today being a new day, so far all is going well. I desoldered the bulbs and I soldered in a 150Ω resistor and a 2.5mm green LED. I am happy with the result. Next I followed JacquesT lead and replaced my drive bay fan with a Zalman F2.  I had previously drilled out the rivets and removed the restrictive front plate. This thing is far quieter now. Since this guy was a smoke previously, and has several accounts on it, its drive isn't so useful yet, so I also did a fresh install of IRIX 6.5.30 via CDROM onto an Ebay Seagate. While I am on a roll I may replace the Cherokee fan with the scythe.

Good luck to you folks and whatever you work on today.

Yay, green bulb, it does look better than the blue one on the older skins. The blue / white led looks good on the Octane 2 blue skins.

The drive bay fan replacement helps a huge amount, my Octane is quieter than my R12k O2. I think the fact the Octane has such solid plating on the metal cage helps a huge amount.

Let me ask you something JacquesT, I just put the Scythe in. My Octane is a single 400 R12k, SE Graphics, no PCI card cage, single SCSI drive. This is vastly different from when I got it, with dual R12k, a fully loaded card cage, EMXI, with additional XIO PVO option and some ATTO XIO card. It also had DAT and dual HDDs. So I have to think the load is a lot less in my minimal config. Anyway, the system is 10 decibels quieter following your mods. Thanks for sharing what you did, so much nicer in the home office this way. I'll post some sound readings to the forum shortly. Letting the machine sit at the desktop after logging in for a few minutes, the air from the scythe, and the hand guard are quite warm, not hot though. How about yours? And I wonder under load, like a tough demo, how hot would it get.

Thanks

Mine is gently warm, but not hot. I've had it on for a whole day and it maintains the same temp. The older MGRAS cards run slightly hotter than VPro so you may get a bit more heat output. Just keep an eye on the temps, it should be OK.

Last time i checked worked on my Ocatane I had to pull to motherboard, the cpu and ram was only gently warm. The vpro card the same. The warmest thing in my Octane was the scsi drive!

OK, thank you. I'll try a test, do some render or something and check RAM, CPU and GPU temps after an hour.

How does one check temps while the machine is running?

I looked for answers to that too, I can't find anything, so I will use a FLIR thermal camera.

I think only the Onyx2/O2k and the Chimera series can do this.
