This I will absolutely concur with.

RE: IRIX Community Edition and Nekoware 2020 - Revival of Nekoware
Well it's good to hear that we are starting to reach a consensus. I agree with almost everyone here in that we /opt/nekoware the new distro if we keep the name. I really think it's important that we respect our legacy that we are coming from.

I think the next set of agreements is deciding on some packaging for foundational use.

By bundling major libs like iconv, gettext, expat, libao, sdl1.2 etc we can greatly simplify people's lives running the new distro. Additionally we can do a developer foundation that gets people started with other stuff they need to start development.

As always please continue to give us feedback and I appreciate everyone who has said their piece.

OK,

So is anyone gonna be butt hurt if we start to throw packages into /opt/nekoware?

Is that what everyone wants? I'm cool with that....

I don't want to get half-way through the build process and someone raises a flag.

So to kick this off --

1 -- We'll do a design document laying out the goals of this project,

2 -- We'll build up a software library in order to enable a "flagship" project to be built based on these libraries.

3 -- MPV, I think, is a good candidate for that "flagship" project from #2. It uses a number of libraries that we want on IRIX and have already been ported (ie. FFmpeg).

4 -- In order not to blow smoke up anybodys ass, we'll produce something of substance, that anyone in the IRIX community can use.

As far as the list goes, that's quite good.

This whole thing is gonna happen --

We're going to rebuild this distro from zlib all the way back up.

I think anyone still running these machines want both media player software and a modern web browser.

If you've followed my posts on Neko or here, you know I'm a total nerd WRT media stuff and video game emulation on IRIX.

I have MPV running, fine, and that'll be the basis for this distribution.

If you're not familiar with this project --

It's the spiritual successor to MPlayer

https://mpv.io/

Dual R14K can decode Blu-Ray.

RE: IRIX Community Edition and Nekoware 2020 - Revival of Nekoware
The issue with /usr/freeware, is that's where SGI puts its GNU "freeware" stuff, and we're going to have software that overlaps it, for sure.

I'm not crazy about using the Nekoware name, FWIW, esp. if we're putting it into /opt (there's no compatibility argument to be made at that point -- That would be our playground).  Again, I'm not philosophically opposed, either.  There's arguments to made for either position, I think -- I just don't want this to be marred by some sense of nostalgia either.

The path name, I think, we have to get it right from the start.

Hamei,

Good you're here. I didn't see that was you.

Browser is totally "pie in the sky" right now, but I have MPV running, and it's better than MPlayer, times two on our HW.

MPV, BTW, can spawn from a Firefox extension ("open with MPV") to pull down a video with youtube-dl and pull off a very lame representation of a dream -- if you have a very high-end SGI, you can watch those videos at 480p with a right-click from a Youtube URL.
