Origin 300 - memory disabled. SOLVED
When starting an Origin 300 I got the following Output from the POD:

Code:
**** System Configuration and Diagnostics Summary ****
CONFIG:
No. of NODEs enabled    = 1
No. of NODEs disabled   = 0
No. of CPUs enabled     = 2
No. of CPUs disabled    = 0
         Mem enabled             = 768 MB
         Mem disabled            = 256 MB
No. of RTRs enabled     = 0
No. of RTRs disabled    = 0

Swapping Memory modules (no matter which ones) gave the same result so I thought this would be a Hardware Problem.

I did a complete IRIX + Freeware install (12GB) and rebooted for kernel reconfiguration to find that suddenly the error was gone:

Code:
**** System Configuration and Diagnostics Summary ****
CONFIG:
No. of NODEs enabled    = 1
No. of NODEs disabled   = 0
No. of CPUs enabled     = 2
No. of CPUs disabled    = 0
         Mem enabled             = 1024 MB
         Mem disabled            = 0 MB
No. of RTRs enabled     = 0
No. of RTRs disabled    = 0

The machine runs as smooth as before, but I can't tell why the error was suddenly gone. Firmware update was not done as it already had the latest one installed.

My bet: it must have been some kernel module or kernel feature (tunable Parameter) that got enabled or modified after the installation that did the trick.

Anyways, hope it helps those that run into the same issue.

Memory banks get disabled when they produce too many errors. You can swap memory sticks around but unless you do an 'enable all' from the PROM prompt they will not get magically re-enabled. In fact, a faulty stick in another bank can result in that bank getting disabled as well.

Memory doesn't really need to be faulty, dirt can cause bad contacts resulting in a disabled memory bank. I usually take all the memory out, clean contacts with pure alcohol and re-insert the banks. Run 'enable-all' from PROM and you're good to go again.
