Boot problem when HDDs are plugged [SOLVED]
Since yesterday have got a strange problem when I boot my Octane, here is the message :

Code:
Boot file not found on device: xio(0)pci(15)scsi(0)disck(2)rdisk(0)partition(8)/sash.
Autoboot failed
Unable to continue; press <enter> to return to the menu:

What's I've done before :
I've just installed and initialized 2 new HDDs in the Octane.
I logged as ROOT
I've follow the process to initialize and mount HDDs

It looks like looking for the boot on the HDD 2 or an other HDD except the HDD 1. When I do a HINV in command line from de PROM menu, the HDD 1 is not presente (!).

BUT, when I disconnect all HDDs from the Octane except the HDD 1, the system boot correctly.

I found something about forcing to boot on a specific HDD here :
http://www.fsck.it/html/geek/tips/boot.html

So according to this doc, I have to type in the PROM (can I do this in the Winterm from my ROOT session ?):

Code:
setenv SystemPartition dksc(0,1,8)
setenv OSLoadPartition dksc(0,1,0)
setenv root dks0d1s0

These 3 lines could solve my problem … Am I right ?

Thanks by advance for your help :-)

RE: Boot problem on when HDDs are plugged
This is what your "printenv" should look like: (These are my Octane2's environmental settings)

WOW ! Thanks very much Irinikus, you're so quick !

I've just check my ENV and SystemPartition, OSLoadPartition, OSLoadFilname, OSLoader are stickly the same (the rest too) … AND … As mad as it could be, the workstation boot perfectly now.

I've to find a way to duplicate this HDD on an other one and/or trying a fresh install (what a frighting thought for a newby like me ^_^!)

Just to be sure, is my first post is right ?

def13, have you had a look at the link below for cloning disks?

https://forums.irixnet.org/thread-702-po...ml#pid5222

There is also this older document, but try gijoe's method above first.

RE: Boot problem when HDDs are plugged [SOLVED]
Would like to bump this old message, perhaps tangentially related to an Octane2 problem I am having.

On startup, the power-on system check complains:

"Internal SCSI: *FAILED* External SCSI: FAILED"

whether or not there are hard disks inserted or not,

and printenv shows none of the SystemPartition / OSLoadPartition / OSLoadFilename variables.

=== ====

I would like to assume that the Dallas 1687-5 chip in there is flat-out dead, and that buying a glitchworks replacement and doing an Octane2 software reinstall will help. But I'm not sure.

RE: Boot problem when HDDs are plugged [SOLVED]
It's possible that your NVRAM has scrambled data that is confusing the POST routines, but the other possibility is that the error messages are correct: there is a fault in the SCSI host adapters. There could be a component or trace common to both, explaining the simultaneous errors.

Have you tried more than one SCSI disk? If not it's entirely possible that whatever disk you're using has failed. These Irix compatible SCSI disks aren't getting any younger...
