What's your Retrocomputing roadmap?

RE: What's your Retrocomputing roadmap?
I'm almost done with my SGI collection, still would like to find a Presenter 1280 panel though, along with a few other odds and ends.
Now it's just a matter of keeping everything running as well and as long as I can, which leads me to my next question...

I'm curious what people plan to do with their collections after they pass away or go through some other similar big life change? Do you donate it to a foundation in your will/estate? I know some of us have rather sizeable collections indeed...

For example, I'm 50, my son is 12 and he currently has no interest really in keeping or maintaining this stuff, nor would I expect him to. I am open to suggestions though as to what I should plan to do with it all after I'm not around to take care of it anymore? Perhaps set up something here where local acquaintances could arrange to pick up said collections?

What do you all think?

If I live to term, I’ll will plan to unload what I’ve collected in my final years, ensuring that every item finds a good home.

In the case of an unplanned exit, stating what should happen with your collection in your will would be a good idea.

RE: What's your Retrocomputing roadmap?
My Old external SCSI box originally from Webforce Indy will soon reborn as ZX Spectrum.

I intend to put floppy drive emulator to that single bay and inside the case there should be room for hard disk and SD card. I will also install PALcoder, so there will be extra S-video and composite outputs on the case. It should also be possible to install at least one expansion card using riser board but currently not planned to add any extra cards. Power source will be FlexATX and I have already ordered one from Ebay.

I had to add some switches and buttons ( power, reset, magic, turbo, disable memory over 128k ), so it has certain " I made this " feel.

This is the ZX Spectrum model I will collect once I have a complete NEXT Cube system, as I had one of these as a kid:

I just love all of the peripherals you can get for these machines! Smile

It lives!!!

Still needs some additional wiring to get all the buttons and switches working, but at least it turns ON and there is nice picture on TV screen. Was scared a little as did mistake first when connecting wires to PALcoder, but luckily nothing fried and only had to correct wiring to get everything working. Originally was not planning to install additional expansion cards but I changed my mind and installed NeoGS soundcard, put IDE-SD converter inside the case and also maxed RAM to 2 MB. I am quite pleased how it all came together.

Very interesting! Smile

Explain to us, what we're looking at here? Is it based on a ZX Spectrum clone?

RE: What's your Retrocomputing roadmap?
It is Russian ZX Spectrum compatible computer.

Web page for the computer is here: http://micklab.ru/My%20Computer/ZXMPhoenix.htm

I bought assembled board from the flea market section of Russian ZX Spectrum forum. ( zx-pk.com ) Google translate is your friend there but people understand English and communication is not a problem.

Very Cool! Smile It looks like they've added quite a few options or improvements to it!

RE: What's your Retrocomputing roadmap?
I told already I was fascinated by an Onyx deskside running a flight simulator in one of the last "serious" SMAU expo here in Italy. At that time SGI was still on top: they proposed me an Indy for 15.000.000 italian Lire (something like 30k euro today, note: not direct exchange rate)

10 years later i have received an Indy from a local power plant. My very first sgi.
Then trading or buying or receiving as donation i have collected all my Sgi systems from the first indy to "big irons" ONYX rackmount.
How difficult is to find items in italy or get them to my country.
Now i own at least one item for every system plus a lot of goodies and gadgets.
I would like to make an expo to share info and experience of sgi computers.
Time, family troubles (my mum with a bloody SLA disease) are against my plans.
My son is only 4 but I hope he will get the passion for my "rusty irons". Now he just like to hide himself in a sgi UV2000 rack.

RE: What's your Retrocomputing roadmap?
Coming to think of it, there are still a few gaps I need to fill before I can consider the SGI collection "complete":

Origin 200
Origin/Onyx 300/3000
Tezro

On the other side of the spectrum I still need a working IRIS as mine emitted magic smoke last time I fired it up. Also some more spares here and there would be nice - esp. real old stuff or mid to late 90s stuff (NUMAlink era).

I also need to find a place where I can build a little "museum" for all the stuff. 99% of it is now boxed/stacked either in my parents basement (dry, heated environment) or at a storage facility (one of their better "rooms" but still only a reused underground parking lot).
