Tips for finding an Onyx

Tips for finding an Onyx
Hello all.
Im a relatively new user, but my hunt for my first system took years.
I feel if I had actively looked a decade ago I may have had more regular results.
anyone have interesting stories or tips on hunting an Onyx down?

I have been contacting University's and old server maintainer co's but no luck so far.
I would be interested to read your discovery stories too.

Cheers
Simon

There was recently one up with a recycler in Coventry, RI, but it was just sold. SGI gear does show up on eBay fairly regularly, although fewer of the larger systems. Patience, persistence, and staying active in communities like this are probably your best bet.

I know that Dodoid has an Onyx and did a video on it (totally shameless plug for Dodoid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bo3lUw9GUJA). Maybe he can chime in with more information on how he got the machine as well.

Keeping ones beady eye open does help, that mild obsession mostly delivers results.
I have less chance here in NZ as I suspect there were not many reasons to have many of them here. so it may take me quite some time. but hey the hunt is 60% of the fun right?
Dodoids videos are great, he's a fortunate kid ti live in theses times and be interested in this stuff, although I have seen a spike in Ebay sales in terms of the prices, "Rare!" I hate that term, there would be 10 pages of the same thing with rare quoted in the description. Ironic.

Yeah New Zealand is definitely going to be tougher. Here in Cali I just kept scouring the local recycling places, eBay, Craigslist, etc till I got lucky and found one. It was nice though because when it was advertised it looked like total hell and it didn't even appear to have the door, but when I picked it up it wasn't that bad. It did have the door and it even had a full 16 GE/IR upgrade + on what was labeled as a VTX Onyx, so that was cool. Now if only I could find a full set of side skirts...

I'd try WETA Digital in Wellington. There big graphics users!

Mosiniak, you tease me, if I could drive to Poland from here, I would.
crikey shipping that thing would be insane.

I think I will try and wait for one to come up local, hehe, thanks though.

@digitalirix, Weta stopped using SGI machines 15 years ago. and I think they recycled them.
they had Onyx's ? plural? and many octanes.

I'd be surprised if Weta still had some old SGI around. Possible though.

A friend of mine was working there until a few omnths ago. Was there for the making of Alita Battle Angel. If she was still there I would ask her to ask about any old SGI still around Weta.

Digital Domain did have a few old SGI when we left Venice for Playa. Sadly. Much of it was thrown away accidentally.
It was meant to be saved but the trash guys got the wrong directions about which computers were supposed to end up where. Some very nice good conditioned Tezros were trashed very badly whilst some useless old PCs ended up at the new place.
