RE: Day job
I'm a consulting Information Security Engineer in the US. I worked for a client on the west coast for a year, and I'm now finishing up a contract for a client on the east coast. Moving from the midwest, to the west coast, to the east coast all in two years has been a bit crazy, but it all worked out. It looks like I may go into general consulting from here (remote work and a week or so of travel every month), but the details are still being figured out by my employer.

There's no direct relation to the SGI stuff, though the Linux knowledge I've picked up over the years has been pretty helpful in getting around in IRIX. I do also collect other vintage computers, primarily Commodore/Amiga and IBM stuff at the moment. The SGI machines have definitely taken my interest, though. The cases are unique, the engineering design extremely impressive, and they're fun to use. Smile

I do desktop support (kind-of, in reality I'm closer to an IT jack-of-all-trades) for a small business. We used to be a full department (Sys Admin, Database (Oracle) Admin/Java Dev, and myself), but you know, cutbacks happened, and I was the cheapest of the bunch...

No real way to fit SGI into that sadly, but I do get to admin several Linux boxes, so at least I get to use a *nix regularly for work.

Staff Scientist (physics) at BAE Systems Inc., which is the wholly owned North American subsidiary of BAE Systems Plc, but my first job out of college was at a tiny little Unix company some of you might have heard of; AT&T. So, started out my career on AT&T Unix systems, changed to my current job where in the years since we've gone from being an SGI shop, to a Sun Microsystems shop, to presently being a RHEL shop; pretty much a classic case of reverse evolution... I'm an airline pilot, so absolutely no connection to SGI beyond being a computer nerd and lusting after these machines as a kid in the early 90s. Smile

I noticed the blue taxiway light sitting next to your indigo2 Power Series when you posted a picture of it, together with the pic of the Indigo2 being the "box that the Boeing 777 came in", and thought you might be an airline pilot! Very nice to see another aviator here! Smile

I still want to get this printed, framed and put up in my computer room! Smile

RE: Day job
For the last 10+ years, IT (Micro)Manager for a medium sized public company. I originally went to school in the mid-90s for Mechanical Engineering. I spent my whole student loan on two computers in '96. A new Pentium Pro 200 with 128mb EDO and NT4/AutoCAD and an Indigo R3k with Irix 4.0.5.

I quickly updated it to Irix 6.2 with the unofficial help of the local SGI office who gave me original media and showed me how to install when I brought the Indigo to their office. It was an oddity for them to get students in but they fully embraced helping me and even gave me an ISA version of a an IRISVision cardset for my PPro! I was told that the IRISVision set was a joke gift the employees used to give each other an Christmas. They were bored of the gag and since I had a 'use' for it, they passed it on and I still have it.

I also used both Suse and Redhat Linux on the PPro so I learned Irix, Linux, and Windows all at the same time. Previously I was Atari ST from '85 - '96.

Irinikus, thanks for the pointing out the poster! Haven't seen that in decades, maybe I should track down a copy for the office wall. My first Indigo came to me indirectly from Boeing. Once I got a taste, I started going down and buying surplus from them. I'm in Vancouver so it was just a few hour round trip. Most of my SGI came from the 777 program. The Crimson RE has 777 program information inside the drive door and I left all the Boeing stickers on the lot.

BiigD, super jealous of your Power Indigo2! Love the badges. I always wanted one but never did get one. I satisfied that craving instead with a 6xR8K/75 Challenge L.

For 18 years I did component level repair on telecommunications equipment, and now for almost 3 years I build, test, and repair video splitters, switches, extenders, and KVM splitters, switches, and extenders as well. I didn't use an SGI system there but got it from there as they were going to scrap it.

RE: Day job
I'm currently halfway through university to achieve a bachelor's in IT. I plan to further solidify my own business after countless amount of times landing a job (I was lucky I was given a job offer as a professor's research assistant and earned a decent sum to get into SGI stuff). My business would be more or less an experimental tech and multimedia venture, seeing what solutions offerings will stick or not. Currently, I'm open for doing SGI servicing and migration consultation around the counties near me in Florida as more or less testing waters on how I should take my business moving forward regarding legacy solutions (a "pilot test" in a way) and even gaining some SGI knowledge. Nothing yet since I've yet to spread it around, but what do I expect for offering something realistically esoteric and with someone still in school. But hey, if people still teach friggin' COBOL, I don't see why not learn this stuff. Then again, anything's a gamble whether you're fully experienced or a little.

Doing SGI stuff since the last time we all partied like it's 1999.

Thanks! It's kind of coming full circle for me - I head off to training for the 777 in December, so the poster will include a couple of pieces of my life in one handy picture. Smile

The taxiway light has an interesting history - I went to college in Austin Texas, and around that time (late 90s) one of the small airports in the area closed to make room for manufacturing facilities for Dell. So like the stupid college kids we were, my roommate and I hopped the fence of the closed airport and 'liberated' a couple of taxiway lights that night. This was one of the remaining ones. Heh!

That's awesome that you got many of your machines from Boeing! I really lucked out with the Power I2 - it's been a fun machine to mess around with. It came with the POWER badge only, and I was able to snag an EXtreme badge for the middle from Ian.

Very nice! The 777's an awesome machine!

The taxiway light's an awesome relic!

The only relic that I have is a complete Boeing 737 throttle quadrant that I got shipped to me from a company in Oklahoma.

Did you receive your initial flying training in the military?
