Lightwave 5.6 in Irix on Octane 2x400mhz

This episode we build a standard 3D scene with basic shapes in modeler and assign surfaces to them before saving the models out for use in Lightwave Layout where we arrange our scene with the objects, cameras and lights, and finally setup the surface parameters, render settings, lights, and anti-aliasing.

Hotkeys

Modeler
t - move
y - rotate
h - scale
u - undo

Layout
b - bones
c - camera
l - lights
o - objects

It was quite easy to sum up Lightwave. Not sure if a lot of people here have it but it may also be fun for Lightwave users to see how far the app has come from what it used to be. I really did a lot of jobs with it between versions 4 and 8. Especially the Ver 7 and F-Prime era.

Next tutorial will likely be Power Animator basics.

Then maybe back to Maya for some basic Character Rigging class. Wink

this is great! I've actually been playing a bunch with lightwave 5.6 on IRIX and I have been pretty impressed on how much quality it actually is able to output. Your final image def helps capture its power!

Thanks for making the video!

LW5.6 !!! I love this software.
It's so easy to use and the render engine is absolutly not bad.
It's a pleasure to use it on an Octane.

Believe it or not the Lightwave Box Shots for 4.0 and 5.0 and a few others on that page are of my own boxes. I think I still have the high res ones without the bg cutout.

Glad you guys like the video. Octane makes Lightwave 5.6 fun. Sadly at the time it was released it was far far slower on a pc so I wouldn't even try Area lights. It would be an hour plus just for one area light with soft shadows. Having an Octane would have mode those jobs much easier to deal with. I used spotlights with shadow maps at the time on PC. Gives you a decent soft shadow for far less calc time.

Still need to get my Octane power supply replaced to do my next tutorial. Haven't seen a 700+ watt PS on Ebay lately. Missed one through bidding.
I think I may just contact Ian at the depot for one.

I was very hopeful for Lightwave Core. I really liked the direction it was going and sadly I think it was the biggest missed opportunity for Newtek. They would have been cutting edge if they had kept it going.

@Intuition : this world is too small [^_^!]

While I looked for a PDF manual of LW5.6, I've just found this interresting link, direct from Newtek :
ftp://ftp.newtek.com/products/LightWave

Edit : I've just open and read the modelling section (chapter 20) of 6.5 Manual ; and lots of basic things looks similar with the 5.6 version.

Does anyone know if the lw5.6 IRIX is archived anywhere on the net? I

I just got my Octane and coming over from Amiga LW5.x, I'd really love to be able to run this here...I can only find 5.0

Great forum.

EDIT: Well, imagine this I was actually able to find my own answer :

Glad you found that... I only had it because it was already on the machine. I would like to add it to my other Irixes
