Attemting fresh IRIX install, mkfs crashes

RE: Attemting fresh IRIX install, mkfs crashes
I have had disks get into a state where the disk tools from Irix simply refused to work. PEBCAK I am sure, but ... Smile

What worked was to take the disk, attach it to a box with an Adaptec controller, and pre-boot low-level format the thing. I know, this is supposed to be the same.

But it isn't.

If you have acess to some elderly peecee hardware, give 'er a shot. I bet it fixes your problem.

I' m working with Callahan to get a working drive with Irix on it by mail (shout out for being my superhero, btw). But to your point, I don't have access to necessary peecee hardware, but I CAN boot into fx. Fx has a low-level format task, but it warns me that it will time out/fail due to running too long.

Octane 2x250 R10k, 1152 MB Ram, 6.5.30, SSE/SSI Dual Head ("unsupported" but it works Biggrin)
O2 300 RM5200, 256 MB Ram
Indigo 100 R4000, Unknown Ram, XS24Z Bad Tod Clock Battery awaiting my desolder/replacement
Altix 350 x2 4x1.6 GHz, 1xBase, 1xCompute No OS (yet; no time to fiddle)

I am glad you solved your problem. Now, if you have a moment, back up an inch or two and read what I wrote again.

RE: Attemting fresh IRIX install, mkfs crashes
Just to close out: New system drive from Callahan arrived, and it took me a bit to figure out I had to do a resetenv from prom to get it to boot. After that I have a working system! During this process, I also learned that the TRam modules on the MXE make the system unstable, so that sucks, but running as an SSE is better than not running at all.

I think in conclusion there were a lot of things that went wrong, probably not all at once, and probably all ID-10t errors of one kind or another, but I'm back in business. I really appreciate all the help everyone has offered on this thread. This is a good community here. I'm pitching in a couple bucks a month for the Patreon, and never opening the damned Octane again if I can help it!
