Attemting fresh IRIX install, mkfs crashes

RE: Attemting fresh IRIX install, mkfs crashes
Blech. Ok, so I did a full sequential exercise of the disc, and timed it this time, and it took 6:43 (give or take). That's hours. Removed the SE and the TRAMs from the MXE to reduce possible graphics problems (I figure I can "upgrade" my graphics once I have a working system), and ran into the same panic. Next I'm going to try booting to the serial console as suggested, and see where that gets me. I have a couple other graphics permutations to try, so if it turns out my SSE board is bad, then I at least have an SSI and an SE board and 2 TRAMs for a different combo. Will keep the thread posted for posterity...

Here's hoping I get a usable system back. Wish me luck!

PS--There is no software/OS upgrade required for going from any MGRS system to any other MGRAS system. Just plug and play.

The only reason I thought that it was a hardware problem was because of the TLB miss error. That usually indicates that the CPU is starting to overheat in my experience.

RE: Attemting fresh IRIX install, mkfs crashes
Well guys, I'm ready to throw in the towel. Tried swapping out various video cards, swapping around ram (and taking various pairs of dims out in case they were bad). Only thing I can't swap out is the CPU or mobo. No matter what I do, I'm getting the panic. Debating whether it's worth buying the cheapest Octane CPU on ebay and giving that a shot, or just parting the system out and buying a new one from Ian or Mashek. But in any case, I've hit my frustration limit. System worked fine before I wiped it. Should have just kept whatever Irix was on it I guess...

Maybe I'll give the Altix another shot at installing SEL9. Been a while since I played with that.

Appreciate all the attempts to help though.

New day. Clear head. Fresh coffee. And...let's see if I can attach an image. I think I've found the issue.

tl;dr (or if the attachment doesn't work, because I'm a n00b): Several bent pins where the mobo connects to the frontplane. Not sure how best to unbend them, or if I should just try to get a new frontplane. Maybe a good time to upgrade my xbow version.

That explains why it used to work, then stopped. I must have borked them when reseating the mobo one of the times I did it. ID-10t error.

Ouch. Very ouch. Might as well try straightening them. Fortunately frontplanes are somewhat common on eBay, I bet Ian has some as well.

I sure hope you come right, as pins that are that bent usually just snap when you try to straighten them! :(

RE: Attemting fresh IRIX install, mkfs crashes
Well guys, the mystery deepens. I got a new backplane on ebay, tried the install again, same issue. Got a new motherboard/CPU/ram combo on ebay (it was a reasonable deal, and an upgrade from 2x195->2x250), same issue. Went headless: removed video card, set console to serial, booted to serial console, same issue.

One big clue I get on the serial console though, because the screen clear doesn't actually screen clear, is the text above the "PANIC" line:

Code:

A), CPU 0 disabled. But I don't think that's the issue, and I can just turn it back on in the prom easily enough. B) This seems to happen immediately after it tries to set up swap space. I've already tried doing a sequential write exercise of the disc (multiple times, which basically kills a day each time). Since I effectively have a completely new system at this point, the only variable remaining is the HDD. At this point, I almost want to see if someone would just pre-install IRIX on a whole new drive for me for a fee...If you know anyone who does that, I'm deep into the pay-to-just-get-it-working space. Otherwise, I'll have to order a new SCSI disc and see if that solves my problem. No idea how far down the money pit goes.

What a pain. Kinda like owning a classic Jag. Or a boat.

Hmm. Very odd indeed.

I could mail you a known working Octane 6.5.30 drive. Let me know.
