I have a Sun Ultra 45 with one CPU (UltraSPARC IIIi) running at 1.6GHz. My problem is that after ~10 minutes, the three big fans start up and are incredibly loud.
Are the fans supposed to be controlled by the OS? I have OpenBSD 6.4 installed on it now. The disc drive is broken so I can't just pop a disc in and install Solaris, I can probably install Solaris on some other machine and use JumpStart or something.
But while I try that, I'm looking for some advice on whether it will help. Has anyone seen anything like this before? Has anyone had success running OpenBSD on a Sun Ultra 45 (or 25) with quiet fans? I see some videos on YouTube of an Ultra 45 booting OpenBSD

In fact, in "reviews" of the Ultra 45 I've found, there's never any mention of loudness. I know on the servers, there is some fan control stuff in the ALOM/ILOM, but the workstations don't have that, only OBP.
Is there something I'm missing?
