Random interesting fact of my life: my late professor of acoustics studied with Stockhausen. I spent 3 semesters with him and it is basically the only period during my university life that I actually learned things that I could not have learned on my own from books.
We designed and built our own speakers (wood case, paper cone) and had one year of recording theory and practice - straight from the mics through the mix to the CD, no computer in between. The musicians just had to get it right - it was amazing. We also did truly old school mixing by cutting and gluing together tapes, playing them in reverse, sending the signal through circuits, recording to another tape and then back.
Sadly, he passed away a tad before turning 80.
