What to do with spare O350's?
Hi,

Firstly, I must acknowledge the assistance from Jwhat (John Hartley) in Melbourne for his help on this project else it never would have gotten off the ground. John provided the Numalink3 router, the memory, fans and brackets and considerable assistance to get this system operational which I am very thankful for.

I have been working away for many months trying to get a number of spare O350 systems into a working configuration rather than just gathering dust in a corner. The opportunity arose when myself and my brother were lucky enough to pick up a rack full of Prism servers which happened to have two Numalink4 routers with it.

I thought that I could use one of these to connect the six spare O350's together to make a single operable system. Despite considerable tinkering , I could not get the router to recognise the O350 systems despite believing they were backward compatible with Numalink3 system. After getting assistance from John, he offered to loan me his spare Numalink3 router and shipped it down to me.

After an L2 controller software upgrade and six O350 firmware upgrades we were finally away!

So here are six spare O350's now connected using a Numalink router (yes its a bit beat up as the freight company shipping it were brutal).

For graphics I used a spare IR4 which was already in the base of the rack and simply connected it to the XIO port on the base O350.

As this was a new system, I took the opportunity to start with a fresh install so I added a Samsung 850Pro SSD into an ACARD ARS-2320S SCSI to SATA converter and used this as the boot drive. It is running a 6.5.30 install and boots remarkably fast!

Here's the (rather long) hinv -v -m output showing the configuration.

IRIS 2#

Unfortunately it' not all quite right as yet as there are missing fans on the C34 and C7 router which have to be replaced. Also, several memory sticks seemed to have died which need replacing. I'll get these sorted as soon as practical.

Here's a photo of the complete system.

Lastly, even though its not been setup for any particular task, I was looking around for an application to test its capabilities. I loaded MultiGen2 flight simulator which runs quickly although I'm yet to learn how to use it! I also don't have a licence so I can't save anything:(

Anyway, sorry bout the low-res pictures but I hope this is of some interest so someone.

Cheers!
