I need a few days break
I rescued a green budgie parakeet from a bad situation two weeks ago. I named him Dende, after the Namekian from Dragon Ball Z. He was not healthy and had a fear of humans and I was trying to get him well enough to go to the vet both emotionally and physically but he unfortunately had a stroke and passed away today. Obviously this is a pet and I don't expect everyone here to understand, but yeah, don't expect prompt PM replies or anything. He was afraid but happier than in the conditions he came to me. I loved him, and I will miss him terribly. Please don't buy birds on a whim, can certainly avoid clipping their wings because that's part of the reason why he had no confidence and was afraid of humans.

I got him to perch last night and spent my morning with him before going to work but when I got home he was already dying and suffering. I couldn't do anything but hold him and cry.

I will miss you, Dende. I will need a few days to process and deal with this loss, as this was the first pet I acquired on my own as an adult believe it or not. All other pets that I have had in my life up until this point have been family pets.

I have a blue one and he's still around and I will keep him close to me.

I lost my sweet little Pommy-Pom in December 2018 and I still miss her every minute of every day.

Sorry for your loss :/ It's been a long time since we had to put my brother's budgie down, but I still remember him fondly.

RE: I need a few days break
I demanded to stop receiving parakeets from people for this reason when I was 15, no parakeet we ever owned died in a kind, gentle, way. I assume it's from inbreeding but stokes, blood feathers, and attacks by longer-term mated couples (one get slightly sick the cage mate buggie attacks it, mortality wounding it) happened to, nearly, every single one.

Only one set worked out (highly trained, exceedingly interactive) and they were killed by a house sitter.

Never a fond memory for me, I switched to cats, I've gotten 20+ years out of most of them. Still hurts like heck when you loose your buddy, but at least they had a long life to provide some comfort.

But you did a kind thing rescuing an animal, even though you knew the likely outcome wasn't rosey, giving a domesticated animal some last days of the way their life should have been is an act or pure kindness.

Because you knew emotionally it wasn't going to be easy for you at the end, but it would have plagued you worse to ignore the animal and leave it. Pets are hard, I don't take it lightly. All our pets were rescues that otherwise would have been destroyed.

I love parakeets, after years of owning cats it's a nice change. They're smarter, cheaper to house and easier to take with you.

Rama, my surviving bird, is awesome. He sings and makes all kinds of sweet noises. But he's super healthy, not like most pet store 'keets.

I'm okay guys, thanks for your kindness. I will be back after the weekend I think...

My current pet; actually not mine, my sister's I'm just taking care of her for a time. She's pretty much feral, she stays away from me insofar as is kitty-kat possible, she finds places to hide in my house that I didn't even know existed. According to my sister, her name is Betty, but I call her Sillers, short for "Silly Cat." Biggrin
