O2 r12000 video performance
Hi all,

I have an r12k, 400 mhz o2 with 1024mb ram with the AV board + Miranda sdi adaptor as well as an incoming Digital video board and Digital Audio radical pci card.  With a maxed out O2 and video options added, how would this perform vs a DPS perception video board on a Pentium 100mhz system.  The reason I ask, is I have always dreamed of having the Perception setup for digitizing, editing and sav8ng to tape setup.  The specs on the perception are similar to the o2 video with the exception that the perception is 4:2:2 where as the Digital Video is uncompressed 4:4:4 at 10 bit.  I’m guessing the O2 would be a much better setup.

Now the big question is what kind of raid setup should I use with the O2?  For the Octane running Jaleo at 2 streams uncompressed and real-time processing, they recommend 27mb / sec or 16 7200 drives stripped over at least 2 scsi lanes as a single scsi channel will not be fast enough.  With the O2 having built in compression, would I be fine using a 4 scsi disc array over a single external scsi channel as the signal will be compressed/uncompressed?

RE: O2 r12000 video performance
Update my old thread…. I am building a retro dual piii 600mhz windows NT4 system running pinnacle miro video DC-30 plus. This is somewhat nostalgic for me as back on 1999, my video editing system was pretty much the same configuration as when I’m building. My previous post mentions the dps perception, however I remember that I was very satisfied with the performance of the dc-30. I’m a few weeks away from completing the piii system.

I have the O2 digital video board, next step is to install Jaleo 3.5 for the O2. I’m curious I’d Jaleo will make use of the built in compression and negate the need for a 12 disk raid and work with a 4 drive MedeaRaid.

Once set up, I will post my results in terms of performance of the dual piii s O2 video.

I think the Digital Video Card in the O2 is a standard D1/CCIR-601 serial digital 10bit 4:2:2 interface.
The DPS Perception PVR is working with the same video standard, and with the same video interface (when you use it with the optional Serial Digital I/O card). With the optional A4V card, you had D/A and A/D converters too and perfect video/audio synchronization. The real bonus is the fantastic DPS Virtual File System. The card digitizes image sequences and "convert" them real time to various formats (pic, sgi, tga, tif ...) You can find them in separate directories on the RAID.

I have worked with the DPS Hollywood cards (higher end cards than the entry level Perception) on Pentium PRO / NT environment, and that was a real monster:
It had FOUR cards, the chrominance card with onboard wide-scsi raid controller, the luminance card with onboard wide-scsi raid controller, the D1 interface card and the audio card. The chroma and luma cards had connected external RAID-0 arrays for real time uncompressed video.
It was a real workhorse, we used these systems with sony digital beta decks.

Totally different league than the Miro DC20/DC30... they were cheap s-video m-jpeg cards for Adobe Premiere.
If you want to use the O2 with m-jpeg video, a single scsi hdd is enough.

Yeah, totally understand the dc-30 is not the same league as the professional. I guess I’m being a little sentimental, but I always thought the feel and performance of my old dc30 back in the day always made me happy. I never really tried video on the o2 to compare paerformances, but I’m getting close to being able to do that with my current setup.
