SGI Octane online! A few more questions -
Equinox - 04-26-2020
Very happy to report that at least one of my two SGI Octanes is now happily booted and running IRIX 6.5.30. I have a few follow-up questions:
- The mouse I am using seems to become unresponsive every time I log out and log back in to the machine. Reseating the mouse fixes this. Any ideas what I can do to fix this before I wear out the PS2 port? Time for a new mouse?
- How can I change the desktop to an image of my choice? Maybe I am not looking closely enough but I didn't see anything for choosing a custom image in the Background application.
- I installed using booterizer, where would the graphics demos be located?
Thanks for everyone's help getting here!

This video that I made shows you how to setup a custom desktop background in IRIX:
What type of mouse are you using?

Some mice act finicky in IRIX, from what I have seen, but I couldn't give you an in depth on
why. Most of my PS/2 mice work just fine, but I have one generic one that doesn't work through my KVM, but works directly attached. I have a feeling it would give me more issues if I used it more.

Is it a mechanical mouse or an optical one?
I do have an optical mouse that does work on these machines, but the mechanical ones are more likely to work.

Huh?
I may be oldskool but when the Octane was made optical mice (as we know them today) didn't exist. All mice had three buttons and a rolling ball. And they worked. What happened?

The main issue I have with ball mice is that you have to clean them and they have mechanical parts that can fail. I have never seen even the cheapest optical mouse fail from the sensor inside although I have had to replace capacitors and in one case saw that a controller chip failed.
