Octane loud double pop after startup. Powersupply dead?
I was going to record the Alias Power Animator Old Irix Tutorial this morning.

Upon starting up my Octane the fan started running. It was only running for about 5 second when I heard two loud firecracker pops from the back.

The fan stopped. Now I can't start it at all. I think that maybe the power supply died. I am hoping this didn't damage the Mobo or other components. :(

Yep, sounds like the PSU went. It could also have blown the fuses...? Pop it open and check for black spots, careful some of the caps could still hold some residual current.

When mine gave up it went with a loud pop, some smoke and it took the houses power down as well. My system components were OK though.

No longer active. Please do not contact me.

That’s sad to hear!

The rest of the system should be ok, I know this because I had the unfortunate experience of ordering a G4 quicksilver from the US, which sat around for years before I plugged it in and tried to fire it up, when I did, I was met with a loud bang and acrid smelling smoke!

I knew exactly what had happened, as soon as I heard the bang!

We use 220V locally and the machines power supply was set for the 110V power supply used in the US.

I managed to source a new power supply for the machine and it now works perfectly.

Ok so I should likely browse ebay for a replacement power supply..

Glad to hear everyone's mobo and other components were ok after said pop.

I would suggest that, and get a Cherokee if you can 747W.

At some point, we’re definitely going to have to learn how to service the various power supplies found in these machines ourselves!
