Neo Geo stuff
Hey guys!

I've been thinking about getting a Neo Geo MVS MV-1B board for consolization purposes. Which are some games you guys recommend I get?

RE: Neo Geo stuff
I used to have a neogeo back in the day. Great console, the only 16-bit system which came anywhere near replicating the true arcade feel in the home Smile Given the prices they started fetching (even in the early 2000's, and especially MVS stuff) I regretted selling it... but then again emulators back in the late 90's (neoragex on K6-233) could run the roms fast as a neogeo could. And I'm more a software guy personally, not so bothered about hardware.

For classic neogeo-ism, it would have to be MetalSlug or Samurai Showdown imo. There were some other great games though... ones I used to play a lot and would recommend:

Platformers:
Metal Slug 1 or 2 (X is just 2 with new artwork, X and later were past neogeo's hayday).
Top Hunter
Eight Man
Shock Troppers

Beat-em-ups (neogeo's trademark genre!):
Samurai Showdown
Fatal Fury
Waku Waku 7
King of Fighters
King of the Monsters 2

Sports games:
Baseball Stars 2
Super Baseball 2020
Street Hoop
Neo Turf Masters
Super Dodgeball
Neo Driftout

Puzzle:
Neo Bomberman
Money Idol Exchange (highly rated)
Puzzle Bobble

I wasn't so much a fan of 'bullet-hell' games, but shmup's were also a neogeo trademark genre so maybe look a some of those.

Hoo boy, I absolutely played the hell out of Puzzle Bobble as a kid in this one eatery with a Neo-Geo cabinet and I fangirl when someone brings it up. The cabinet also had Metal Slug 5 from what I remember, but I never got the hang of it. Might revisit it someday? Well, the game that is. The eatery closed years ago.
But yeah, if I ever get a Neo-Geo cabinet it would definitely be something to stuff just Puzzle Bobble on. And I know it's supposed to be "Bust-A-Move" in the west, but I sorta don't like calling it that. It isn't a dance game of any sorts, not even remotely. What kind of doobies Taito was on to name it that when it got localized?

Yeah puzzle bobble was fun... that and Money Idol Exchange were strangely addictive... Neo Bomberman was fun, but too easy imo.

I Didn't realise they had soooo many Metal Slugs o.0! I remember the ports coming out on PS1, but Metal Slug 3 was the hype about the time I switched to other consoles and never got to play it :(. '3D' really killed the 16-bit era, neogeo was definately the 16-bit overlord though!

Just beeing wasting some of the evening watching neogeo videos on youtube. Nostalgia is strong right now! Shock troopers wasn't a platformer, I think I got that confused with Top Hunter (was thinking about something else I think...it's been 20 years since I have been near a neogeo game tbh). Shock Troopers was good too though, especially if you are an Ikari Warrior/Commando fan.

If you do end up consolizing your MB, make sure you get a cover for the slot. As for games, I would recommend the following:

Last Resort
King of Fighters '98
King of Fighters 2002
Samurai Shodown Series
Real Bout Fatal Fury Series
Windjammers
Metal Slug Series
Kabuki Klash
Waku Waku 7
Gamefan
Octane

RE: Neo Geo stuff
I have my mame64ui configured for Metal Slug.

I was able to get MS 1, 2, 4, and X to run. The copy I have of 3 isn't recognized by Mame for some reason.

Now that I am older and could buy a full Neo Geo system I have been tempted but have yet to do it.

I mean specifically the cartridge based AES system. BUT since my main interest is the Metal Slug games I have yet to do it since the Metal Slug cartridges for AES are very expensive even by Vintage Game prices.

The arcade carts are of course much more affordable and available so I'd look into the converter that can use the MVS board as mentioned here.

My list reflects the lists here.

Samurai Showdown
Metal Slug
King of Fighters
Fatal Fury
WindJammers
etc etc

At the moment my Mame tides me over. Though at some point I'll make the jump.

Octane 2x400O2 300O2 400Origin 200 2x250
