Dosbox 0.73 with OpenGL support
This was posted to Nekochan before, but was not archived.  Reposting here to keep it around.

The O3 optimizations made a difference with performance, and this supports OpenGL.  Resizing windows on the fly, etc...
Coupled with a streamlined dosbox.conf .. many dos games can play well on IRIX

RE: Dosbox 0.73 with OpenGL support
I've just installed this successfully on my Tezro and I now have Hexen up and running! (although it's running incredibly slowly!)

I've also just got Abuse up and running! This is Great!!!! Smile

Ive also just installed Descent! (runs very slowly though!)

I've also just installed SC2000 (also running slowly though.)

I do hope that there's a way to optimise DosBox to run software faster, but this is still rather cool and amazing to see!!! Smile

Does it run any faster if you increase the CPU cycles? 2000 cycles is probably only roughly equivalent to a 286 or early 386 speed-wise, so I'd expect SC2000 and pseudo-3D games to run slowly. Most of these only ran well on 386 DX33s and 486s back in the 90s.

There's a good table on the DosBOX Wiki about this: https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/Performance

Indigo2 R10000/IMPACT  R10000 195MHz, 384MB RAM, MaxIMPACT (1MB), 36GB 15k & 300GB 10k drives, new/quiet fans, 100Mb G160 NIC, IRIX 6.5.22&
[Image: Fuelb.png] R14000 600MHz, 4GB RAM, V10 Graphics, 72GB 15k & 300GB 10k drives, new/quiet fans, 1Gb NIC, IRIX 6.5.30
O2  in storage...

Thanks for the info! Smile (I'll take a look at the table)

I've been playing around with it and observing CPU activity vs clock cycles set and I've noticed that if I set it to use 4500 cycles I'm most effectively making use of the CPU that's in use. (As DosBox only makes use of one of the four available CPU's)

I’ve also installed SoftWindows 95 and it doesn’t seem to imulate dos games as well as dosbox does, however it does run Diablo well.

I set the cycles to "max" and now it's running well! Smile

RE: Dosbox 0.73 with OpenGL support
there seems to be a bug when compiling dosbox with mipspro - the "mount" command gets broken. I circle back every now and then to take a look at it but it seems to be way above my programming pay grade (I'm probably close to an unpaid intern at this point)

RE: Dosbox 0.73 with OpenGL support
Lots of tweaking needed in the dosbox config to reduce things here and there.
also, keep something like xosview running so you can see CPU load.. and then adjust your cpu cycles in dosbox while in-game to get it just so its not pegging the cpu 100%. I find many games needed different CPU cycles. some could go to 4000, some couldnt go more than 2000.. and ran better with 1800, etc..

Also, Sim City 2k and other games do run a lot better/smoother in amiga form (uae emulator.. I posted a build here too) versus dosbox on IRIX.

Softwindows95 runs anything windows 3.1 and early win95 the best though.. like Simcity 2k. I have found that running even DOS games like WarCraft 2 in Softwindows95 works faster than dosbox.. just you need to tweak some things.

Irinikus: "I’ve also installed SoftWindows 95 and it doesn’t seem to imulate dos games as well as dosbox does, however it does run Diablo well."

Is that a typo in that Diablo does 'not' run well? Or did you actually get Diablo running in it? I tried years back and gave up assuming it required newer directX version and breaks the OS install if that is attempted. If it works well for you.. how did you get it to work?

Irinikus: Just fyi in case you may not have known.. descent, abuse, and Hexen2 have native IRIX ports (nekoware).

There's an NE2000 patch for DOSbox that would be useful. It'll let you load a DOS packet driver and use a 'real' network.

Oh wow.. Diablo 'does' work in SoftWindows95! I was using different versions, original CDs, and sources before, but when I found a RIP version online it works great.. and plays fast too.
