spinning 3d models as background
I was playing around with setting up a custom image for the background of one of my accounts, and I started poking around with the "CPU Eater" animated background.  I poked around even more and I was able to setup a custom background that I don't believe I saw before, and I assume this opens the possibility for countless cool animated backgrounds using powerflip or maybe even other 3D tools.

Does anyone have more info on powerflip or how to make 3D models to use with it?

Anyway, here is my ~/.backgrounds :

Code:
#################################################################################################
######################################  Custom Backgrounds ######################################
#################################################################################################

background "Ultra64 - no icons"
    command "-execute /usr/sbin/bgpaste -o 0 0 -t 0 0 0 /usr/people/ultra64/ultra64_1280x1024.rgb"
    default "-execute /usr/sbin/bgpaste -o 0 0 -t 0 0 0 /usr/people/ultra64/ultra64_1280x1024.rgb"
    exeok "/usr/sbin/bgpaste"
    readok "/usr/people/ultra64/backgrounds/ultra64_1280x1024.rgb"

background "Ultra - image"
default "-image /usr/people/ultra64/ultra64_1280x1024.jpg"

background "Ultra - xli"
command "-execute /usr/local/bin/xli -onroot -fork /usr/people/ultra64/ultra64_1280x1024.jpg"
default "-execute /usr/local/bin/xli -onroot -fork /usr/people/ultra64/ultra64_1280x1024.jpg"
   exeok "/usr/local/bin/xli"
   readok "/usr/people/ultra64/backgrounds/ultra64_1280x1024.jpg"

   readok "/usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/data/stars.defs"
   readok "/usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/data/space.ydl"

here is what the powerflip options mean:

Code:
-bash-5.0$ /usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/powerflip -h
Usage:
/usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/powerflip [-rsSCwWLRDhM] [-B blurfactor] [-Fdensity] [-f r,g,b]
        [-T title_message] [-m material,backmaterial]
        [-p x,y,z] [-o q1,q2,q3,q4] [-c r,g,b]
        [-b backgroundfile] modelname [modelname...]
-s Stay still, objects won't get random rotation
-S Stereo mode
-C Turns clipping planes on
-w Models are wireframe
-W When moving, draw in wireframe
-L No lighting
-r Redraw scene even when nothing is moving
-D Debug mode
-h Help (this message)
-B Turns on motion blur
-M No multisampling if available
-F Turns on fog with given density
-f Turns on fog with given color
-m Gives object the specified default material
-T Display title_string when loading data
-L Setup for lines model (no lighting, etc)
-b Use YAODL file as the background
-r Continuous redraw
-R Root (background) window
-p Position of models
-o Orientation of models, as a quaternion
-c Set color for window background
-bash-5.0$

RE: spinning 3d models as background
seems one can put up a bunch of models at the same time!  I haven't figured out how to position them in different spots yet - if anyone has some more info on what powerflip actually is that would be great (is it really inventor?)

I call this one two cubes in space (added to ~/.backgrounds):

Code:
 background "SGI space CUBES"
   command "-execute /usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/powerflip -R -o -0.3426,-0.2307,-0.1561,0.8971 -p 0.5316,0.3363,-0.3676 -b /usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/data/stars.defs /usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/data/logo.ydl /usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/data/logo.ydl"
   default "-execute /usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/powerflip -R -o -0.3426,-0.2307,-0.1561,0.8971 -p 0.5316,0.3363,-0.3676 -b /usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/data/stars.defs /usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/data/logo.ydl /usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/data/logo.ydl"
   exeok "/usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/powerflip"
   readok "/usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/data/stars.defs"
   readok "/usr/demos/General_Demos/powerflip/data/logo.ydl"
