Complete conflict free IRIX 6.5.30 install
Now that I've got my Tezro up to the latest firmware revision, I want to give it the best IRIX install possible before I start installing other software.

I have the following disc iso's:

Are there any other discs in the list that I don't need and are there any you would recommend I get?

In which order should they be read in order to prevent conflicts during the install?

The Patch folder shown is the complete set of patches for 6.5.30 from the FTP from this site.

The reason I'm asking is because I haven't got 6.5.30 to install without conflicts in the past.

Re: Complete conflict free IRIX 6.5.30 install
Back in the admin days the order of opening disks in inst i stuck to was:
- Installation tools / Overlay 1
- Overlay 2
- Overlay 3 (if exists)
- 6.5 Foundation 1
- 6.5 Foundation 2
- Development Foundation (latest is 1.3)
- Development Libraries (same version as DevFound)
- NFS3 may99
- Applications
- Complementary Applications

I then let the machine install and after reboot clean it up (chkconfig, desktop, setting up NIS). Only after that i install the Compiler Execution Environment and the front-ends.

With this recipe you will get some conflicts but these are only a handful and deal with netscape plugins and extra utilities which are not essential to IRIX.
Modifying the list of packages to install can be done at the inst prompt with commands like 'keep', 'remove', 'install', etc...

Ian at SGI Depot has a page on installing IRIX as well, check it out <URL url="http://www.sgidepot.co.uk/6.5inst.html">here

Thanks very much!

My mistake was that I read the Applications CD after foundation 2! (the rest were read in the same order)

I've managed to get hold of the development libraries.

Do you know where I could get Development foundation 1.3? (will it make a huge difference over version 1,2?)

Development Foundation and Libraries versions are tied to a certain base version of the MIPSPro compiler.
Versions 1.3 ties with MIPSPro 7.4.x, 1.2 ties with 7.3.x and 1.1 with 7.2.x
So in order to install a specific compiler you need the Development Foundation/Lib matching the compiler plus the Compiler Execution Environment plus the front ends.

You seem to have 7.3 series which is fine for regular C and some C++ development. I do recommend to get the latest 7.4 series if you need more recent C++ capabilities, although there are some problems when using the latest MIPSPro 7.4.4 compiler with more recent C++ code

Yeah, although the folder named "development tools maintenance release 7.2.1.3" does not match the 7.3 series, so you can leave that folder out.

Irinikus, If you haven't already done so, I'd suggest foregoing a default installation of the Applications and Complimentary Appications CDs.

By the time IRIX 6.5.30 and 2006 had rolled around, I suspect SGI was already beginning it's decline. They replaced some of the traditional IRIX apps with open-source alternatives. Those alternative apps can be made to work, but they don't provide for classic IRIX desktop tools many of us have grown accustomed to.

On the Applications CD, a default installation will result in the removal of Adobe Acrobat 4.05 for GSview-4.6b and the Ghostscript-8.50 PostScript render engine with fonts.

The default installation of the Complimentary Applications CD will result in the IRIX printer app Impressario being replaced with ESP Print Pro, 4.5.5.01. To add injury to insult ESP Print Pro requires a licence.

I'd hold off on both CDs and install them after 6.5.30 is up and running, using Software Manager. The SM GUI makes selectively installing only the applications you want fairly simple and straightforward.

If you've already done a default install of both 6.5.30 Application CDs, it is possible to restore Impressario and Acrobat. You'll just have to jump through a few hoops to get there.

Re: Complete conflict free IRIX 6.5.30 install
To resolve some of the netscape/java plugin conflicts (regular install, not flame bits), I found I had to "open additional" from the software manager and add:

/applications/dist/dev/

and

/compapps/dist/dev/

Still seems to be something a little weird going on with the java2_plugin.sw32.mozilla_freeware - which I can't seem to resolve with the standard disk set (seems to want fw_mozilla.sw.mozilla 1278327220 - 2147483647).

This might be due to me having since installed Maya + dev tools, which in turn has messed with some of those java dev packages...
