Wonder if this might result in cheap/development boards and a renewed interest in MIPS in general?

RE: MIPS Goes Open Source
The features like patent protection, SIMD/DSP support and centralized ISA sounds like an advantage over the competitor RISC-V

It is nice to know that there are still MIPS systems in some incarnation running out there, be it embedded or in niche products.

RE: MIPS Goes Open Source
RISC-V has SIMD support via the vector extension and/or Hwacha. There are a few small groups working on DSP-related items, but generally focus on utilizing "bolt-on" DSP's as accelerators. RISC-V and MIPS both have a certain number of pros/cons associated with each. Its great to see MIPS becoming open source though.
