On the doorstep of the year of the Pig : What do you use your Sgi for?
ESo it's almost 2019, Moore's Law is saturating just a bit and Youtube is spewing out more 'stars' than the solar system has dust particles.

Our dear vintage machines are getting older and less suited to modern internet rubbish and social media gumpfh.

So what do you use you Sgi machine(s) for? Anything productive? Anything fun or challenging?

(Making videos of you pulling the dog's nose in the rubber demo doesn't count as productive...)

I'm working on the bootstrap for irisware. Hopefully someone with better Perl skills can help me out at some point.

Technical problems should be sent my way.

Hey I love that demo!

In all seriousness though, I've been retro actively pushing the envelope trying to learn Maya 6.5 on the Tezzie, which is sort of an irony considering I'm very well-versed in Maya 2018. It's just a matter of trying to fill in the gaps where features aren't there yet in the older version and seeing how far I can get with it... using mental Ray no less! :-)

I'm (still) getting my O2 and Octane set up with software. Time is on the short side these days but I have a little Maya / composite project in mind, nothing major just a good model, good textures and a comp. I killed my Pi server a few weeks ago and had to set it up again, but that's done now so onto the software installs, starting with Maya 5.

I may have a few days with Softimage as well as I've never used it.

First I have to find a new srive for my Octane...

I'm working on my dev skills, 3D skills and compositing skills - I feel learning the older stuff is sort of fun and challenging, and when one's options are limited it just makes the journey even more fascinating.

I like the older versions of some of the GFX software.  Even though i use the current versions, I find that todays software is bloated to the point that its becoming overwhelming.  There is something about the simplicity of the earlier generations that appeal to me.

For my Octane, I have dedicated that to my VFX rig.  Jaleo is the primary Video compositing/editing for raw uncompressed video linked up to a Sony DSR DVCAM deck and using a DSR PD170 CDCAM camera (staying in the CCIR-601 universe).  I have a couple of personal projects planned to shoot a couple of shorts around our dogs that volunteer and one does agility.  My goal is to shoot, edit, composite in the SD SGI realm and may end up finishing on my current windows 7 PC.

Mainly development. Also for testing (older) software I would have never been able to afford.
