I think a good one to start with would be "advanced programming in the unix environment", perhaps the 1st (1992) or 2nd (2005) editions for MIPSpro, I'm not sure. you can find the source code for the books here:

Another good book is "The C Programming Language" 2nd Edition covering ANSI C by Brian W. Kernighan and Dennis M. Ritchie.
