It appears that this component is present on other onyx backplanes:

I can double check my documentation about this silicon bit (packed away in some box in my garage), but if my memory serves me right, it IS an ID chip. In the past I have had to move this bit from a dead backplane to a new one to allow certain licensed programs to work. It is similar to the "ID Button (that looks like a battery) on the Octane backplane.
