What IBM Hardware do you have?

Re: What IBM Hardware do you have?
I don't have any IBM computers but I do have an IBM DS4300 "Turbo" SAN server with EXP710 expansion tray with ~ 30 disks installed (mostly 300GB/10K FC). Interestingly, the controllers of the SAN server run vxWorks...

I also have the IBM version of the Brocade 5000 SAN switch, a.k.a IBM model 2005-B5K with 32 * 4Gb FC ports.

There's one mod I have to do to the SAN switch: it's airflow is back to front, unlike all my other 19" equipment. Ideally, I should mount it in the back of the rack, but then I can't see what's going on ^H^H^H I love the blinkenlights, and the cables are all to the front of the rack because of the SAN switch that preceded this one. I think it'll be easiest to just mod the SAN switch and invert the airflow direction.

Both the SAN server and switch are fully licensed Biggrin

RE: What IBM Hardware do you have?
Just finished my IBM PC display consisting of a IBM PC XT 5160, Portable PC 5155 and PC Convertible 5140.

The 5160 has a fully working HDD which is a miracle considering it was an ebay purchase and the heads need parking! It has a PC-XT to PS/2 keyboard/mouse converter and a VGA card so I can use it with a KVM switch. The PC 5155 has an XT-IDE card in it with a 2.5" ide drive secured by a custom bracket I built which fits in the expansion card blanking plates, and the 5140 is unmodified.

Both the 5160 and the 5155 have ISA network cards in running MTCP to make things easier to get stuff on and off them - all the 5.25" floppy drives are in good working order as well.

*edit* now with added image!

RE: What IBM Hardware do you have?
Just picked up two FREE Intellistation Power 275's. They were pretty gross inside/outside, as they were sitting in a guy's garage for over 5 years. I've gone through and cleaned and re-seated everything, and have one up and running nicely.

Tomahaix (good)
CPU - 1x 1GHz Power4+
RAM - 2GB
GPU - GXT4500p
Storage - 2x 36.4GB HDDs
OS - AIX 6.1 (no CDE)

Battlaix (some issues)
CPU - 2x 1.45GHz Power4+
RAM - 8GB
GPU - GXT6500p
Storage - 4x 75GB HDDs
OS - AIX 6.1
Issues:
1. SCSI backplane causes a file system issue and won't boot. I swapped the one from Tomahaix and could boot fine. Replacements are cheap on the 'Bay.
2. Once I could boot to CDE, I found that AIX was running REALLY SLOW. It takes a long time to do simple tasks like opening a terminal, closing a window, opening SMITTY, etc. I didn't get a chance to do much troubleshooting, as I just wanted to get at least one machine up and running well.

I've since swapped over the 8GB RAM, GXT6500p GPU, 4-pack HDD, and working SCSI backplane to Tomahaix and it's running like a champ. It's just unfortunate that this one has the base processor set. I'll get a replacement backplane and swap everything back again to see if I can figure out what the issue(s) is with the the 2-way system.

Unfortunately, I don't have any AIX media so I'm really nervous about making a change that could require something from a CD or need the boot diskette.

Also, since they were sitting on a concrete floor in a garage, both of the metal bases are heavily rusted. Luckily I have metalworking skills and tools so will be cleaning these up as well.

RE: What IBM Hardware do you have?
Well, happy to say that I managed to get Battleaix up and running. I stripped everything off the motherboard, swapped every component from Tomahaix that had the same P/N, re-seated everything else, and it booted without errors. The original scsi backplane was still causing issues, so I need to replace it to get the lower-end Tomahaix system up and running.

Yes, 2.5.1. It's available on-line in various places if you Google for it. It only runs on a small subset of PowerPC systems though.

There's also a PowerPC version of OS/2 kicking around..

RE: What IBM Hardware do you have?
Only two pieces of true IBM interesting hardware, a POWERstation 7012/370 (POWER-1 MCA workstation), and a B50 rack mount 604e headless server. (on the less interesting side have a Pentium-M ThinkPad for older x86 stuff).
Software only have a "Blue Spine" OS/2 Warp 3 with BonusPak that I used to have running on a PC, along with AIX 4.3.3 (the 370) and 5.1 (the B50).

It's not that I don't like IBM kit, it's well made, but it just hasn't been worth spending lots of money on to me.

RE: What IBM Hardware do you have?
A 7012-370 RS/6000 running AIX 4.3.3 with a Token Ring Bridge running for other IBM PS/2 stuff, a Fast-Ethernet Card, and an UltraSCSI card attached to a DLT Drive and a Sun Multipack 711 running NFS for all of my SGI software, a pretty awesome machine that is surprisingly performant for having a 66MHz POWER in it.

A 7012-590 that needs a PSU repair, the PSU in this thing spans the entire length of the machine, it's positively gargantuan.

3x PS/2 Model 80's, two of them with Cyrix 486 upgrades in them, SCSI cards and 16MB of ram, 16/4 Token Ring card.
3x Model 77's with DX/2's or AMD 5x86-133
1x Model 70 w/Reply Planar
2x Model 70
2x 56SLC2's
1x 55sx

An AS/400 from the original series, it's disgusting and huge, I'd like to get it running someday, but a set of V2R2 tapes for it appears to be unobtainium, and all disks in the machine have failed.

A PC GL-300? It came from somewhere and I've not yet powered it on
Some IBM Dual Pentium Pro box that has also never been powered on.

RE: What IBM Hardware do you have?
In my place of employ, we used to use IBM card readers to account for time spent on machining operations, this system was still in use well into the 90s. The data on the cards was just the well-known traditional hole punches. This picture is from some time in the 1970s, if you look at it full size (it's scanned at 300dpi on my 1998 vintage HP 6300C), you can clearly see the IBM logo on the left side of the top front panel.
