SS20 VGA "out of range"

SS20 VGA "out of range"
Hey all, I'm trying my hand at some Sun stuff for the first time.  Got a Sparc20 with appropriate cables and connected to known good monitor (at least for all my SGI gear), but when power on the Sparc the monitor says "out of range", I gather it is running some sort of res/hz that the monitor can't handle?

I saw a few thing on the interwebs about hitting L1+a then sending in some cmds to change the res, but not knowing what i'm doing, i'm not sure if this is the correct method or there is some other way to get the Sparc to default to some lower res -

L1+a --> output-device=screen, then output-device=screen:r1280x1024x60

Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Hello:

(While we wait for knowledgeable folks to provide actually helpful answers)

Any chance you can set your monitor at 1152X900X60?
Also - do you know if your SS-20 supports 1280x1024? If I remember correctly, some SS-20's w/ 4MB VSIMMs only support 1152x900.

Reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SPARCstation_20

Hope this helps.
Best regards

RE: SS20 VGA "out of range"
Well, not sure what I did, i hooked up a serial cable (db25 --> db9, db9 --> usb), turned the machine on and saw all the startup output in a serial console. Next thing I know the monitor connected to the SS20 flashes, and then i see the startup info on the screen, finally resulting the "ok" prompt.

I have no idea why it worked all of a sudden, and the res is 1152x900 at 66hz.

After startup the info said last boot was March 8th 2006 Smile
