For Sale: O2 - R10000 250MHz - 256MB
Greetings,

Back in 2005 the company I worked at was getting rid of lots of old SGI machines that we were using in the late 90s and very early 2000's for 3D graphics development. I got ahold of one of the O2's. I wasn't sure what I would ever do with it but I thought it was cool. I wrapped it in saran wrap to keep the dust (mostly) away and set it in a closet. There it sat for 18 years until a couple months ago when I was cleaning out stuff and decided to try to get rid of it. I'm a computer guy but I don't know much about SGIs except what basic research I've done. We used them back in ~2000 but not a bunch.

First of all, it appears to boot up fine. However I don't have a Green on Sync VGA monitor (I don't really know what that means exactly). So I can't see what is on the screen. When I turn it on, the light momentarily is red then changes quickly to orange. About 30 seconds later the light turns green and it makes the "IRIX boot up jingle" (or whatever its called). So I assume that means successful bootup. Does that sound right?

I have some PS/2 to USB connectors I was trying to use with a USB keyboard and mouse but obviously I can't tell if it's working without being able to see anything.

But obviously I can't tell what version of IRIX they are running without access to a monitor that works for it. Last time we used them at that company was probably mid-late 2000. And as far as I know that was the last time it was used. Maybe that can help gauge the IRIX version?

Anyways, it's an R10000 250 MHz. It has 256 MB ram. I think the HDD is 4GB. The CD-ROM opens and closes just fine.

When I pulled it out of the closet I was disappointed to see some damage had happened to it somehow over the years, even though it had not been moved. There is a crack on the top of the case that you can see in the pictures. The lower rear part of the case cracked and broke off. When I removed the fan shroud the tab for it broke as well. The plastic pieces on these things sure seem to be brittle! :-(

Otherwise, the thing appears to be in good clean condition and appears to be functioning perfectly. I'm honestly very new to this IRIX/SGI collector scene. I don't know exactly what something like this is worth. Some research through this forum indicates maybe $350-ish. But I'm open to negotiation. I would like it to go to someone who will appreciate the history of SGI.

The thing is obviously very heavy but we can figure out some sort of shipping option. I live in Northern Colorado and would be open to it being picked up in person if that helps.

Please message me if interested.

I would be very careful if you decide to ship this otherwise it will probably end up in pieces

Thank you. How do people typically sell systems on this board? Local pickup only?

Nope. One of the nice points of an O2 is they deliver good ol' VGA so just plug that wahr in to the socket.

They do deliver sync-on-green so the monitor has to tolerate that - normally if it doesn't you just get a strong greenish tint, which would not stop you from seeing the display.

And I think there were a few monitors that were snotty and didn't speak to an O2 - I forget why, some cheapskate shortcut in the monitor - but almost all will work fine. I used a samsung and a dell both, flat panel lcd, with an O2, just plugged that baby in.

Go forth and do likewise :-)

The ps/2 keyboard and mouse may be a problem tho. Those usb adapters never work. I don't know why they make the things, just to rip people off ?

Or you take it apart, send the plastics separately carefully packed and the chassis in a different box.

I could certainly take it apart and ship it in pieces, carefully wrapped.

Anyone who would like this just shoot me a message and we can figure out a fair price and shipping details.

Thanks!

It would be nice to know what's in/on it. If, for example, it had a copy of Varimetrix installed I'd be sending you cash by jet, immediately. However ....

Those adapters did not work for me on my O2 so get an ps2 mouse and keyboard, a vga-able screen (or an adapter dvi, hdmi, whatever) and if necessary boot the installation tools and overlays cd 1 (archive.org) and set a new password if you cannot login or use the demos or guest login.
You should be able to open SoftwareManager (swmgr) as non-root too, just to see what's installed there.

Other possibilities are to use telnet (after an ipscan) or a terminal 9800/8/N/1

it is not so complicated - if you have some questions ask here

Okay so I could get ahold of a serial cable, and connect it between the console serial port (#1) and serial port on another PC and then use Putty or something to connect to the O2? Do I need some sort of login or something to do connect to it (like SSH or telnet)? Because I have no clue what the login would be. I just know the O2 appears to boot up to where the IRIX boot up jingle sounds and then light turns green, which I assume means it's a successful bootup. Do I just use a regular RS-232 cable? Does it need to be a null modem cable or is that the same thing? Been many years since I messed with serial cables.
