What would you do with a SunFire V240?
I recently got around to powering on said server and resetting the ALOM password. It has 2x 1.5GHz Ultrasparc IIIi CPUs, 2GB of RAM, and a 146GB disk.
I installed an old version of Solaris 10 to reset the password. My question to you all is: what would you do with this server? I’ve briefly looked at other OSes like Debian and Tribblix. There is an XVR-600 graphics card inside but I don’t know how to utilize it.

I have one in the garage, similar spec but without graphics, 16GB RAM, and dual 1.34GHz CPUs. You lucky dog to have the 1.5's!
Ultimately, you do what everybody else does with a rackmount UNIX server. You code on it. You do UNIX-y things. You run java apps since they're cross platform. You can run free OSes like OpenBSD or gentoo linux that builds on SPARC64.

I don't know what else to tell you other than... have fun with a machine that measures uptime in years! Smile

RE: What would you do with a SunFire V240?
Hi Canned Noodles,
I have more than one Sun Server and use them for different things besides coding (I do not code :-) )

My V210 is my Bootp Server for new Sun machines.
My V490 is my SunRay SSRS and Windows98 server with a SunPCI card.
My V890 is an Oracle server with 8 CPU and 32 GB RAM, but due to power requirements only very seldom powered on.

Else I have a SunFire v20z with Windows 2000, a Sun w2100x workstation (Windows XP), a Sun 1500 red workstation (Solaris 10) and a SparcStation 4 with freeBSD.

Why not get a cheap SunRay 2 or 3 and try out getting it to run? Then get some more, place them in the house as cheap and fast internet access terminals :-)

I have some spares, if you happen to be in Europe.

SGI o2 (R5k, 180 MHz, 128 MB RAM)
SunFire V210 (2 CPU, 1 GB RAM), SunFire V490 (2 CPU, 8 GB RAM), SunFire V890 (8 CPU, 32 GB RAM)
SunFire v20z (2 CPU, 4 GB RAM), Sun Java Workstation w2100x (2 CPU, 4 GB RAM)
SparcStation 4, HP DL 380p Gen 8 (2x E5-2690v2, 256 GB RAM), Apple Xserve 3,1, IBM xSeries 360 (4x Dual Xeon, 1 GB RAM)
2x Dell PowerEdge SC 1425 (2 CPU, 6 GB RAM)

A question, which version of SRSS are you running?

I do like the idea of using it as a Jumpstart server to get Solaris 10 installed on a few Sun machines I have lying around (they are all just lying around).

collecting old UNIX systems I don’t know how to use
