SGI Indigo 2 Power Consumption

SGI Indigo 2 Power Consumption
I was curious about the power consumption of my Indigo2 Solid Impact computer, so I bought a watt meter and measured the wattage of this computer. I found after bootup in idle my power consumption was 175 watts. This was higher than data reported below for a similar system. I pay 31cents per kwh, so my monthly cost to keep this machine up and running 24h is about $40.  SGI depot web site had a post giving the following data for various SGI computers. Feel free to post your measurements if you have taken them. See attached table

The Impact graphics is pulling more power than the Extreme -- there's a different power supply involved... that might explain your variance.

Indigo2 IMPACT  : R10K-195MHz, 1GB RAM, 146GB 15K, CD-ROM, AudioDAT, MaxImpact w/ TRAM.  IRIX 6.5.22

O2 : R12K-400MHz, 1GB RAM, 300GB 15K, DVD-ROM, CRM Graphics, AV1/2 Media Boards & O2 Cam, DV-Link, FPA & SW1600.  IRIX 6.5.30

 : 2 x R14K-600MHz, 6GB RAM, V12 Graphics, PCI Shoebox.  IRIX 6.5.30

IBM  : 7012-39H, 7043-140

Well the sgi depot list of power consumption also does not have an Indigo2 system identical to mine for a direct comparison. That is why.

Have you measured the power consumption when the system is turned off ? I remember a post on Nekochan about this issue.

Yes I did, I think that it was about 7-8 watts, less than 10.

WTF? Please explain. Do you mean less than a cent per kwh or 5 cents per kwh? How is either possible? We pay like 30 to 40 cents ATM (plus fixed costs for the connection) IIC in Germany. The highest I had in my family was over 60 cents (plus fixed costs) last year.

RE: SGI Indigo 2 Power Consumption
From what I understand, the Nordic countries produce more hydropower than they consume in electricity. If the hydroelectric plants are state-owned, as I believe most are in Norway, they can produce energy at lower prices than alternative sources. Germany on the other hand has little hydropower and most of its energy (since the nuclear phase-out) is from natural gas, now much more expensive post-Nordstream. Ironically much of that gas comes from the Norwegian North Sea, which could further offset the Nordic domestic energy markets by effectively subsidizing them.
