Iris 3130
So, I purchased an Iris 3130. I plan to fully restore and repair it. It is currently in transit, and I will post more once it arrives

RE: Iris 3130
Wow.  Just finding a 3130 is an impressive feat.  Restoring and running it will be amazing.

Please be sure to let us know how it goes.  It's the only way most of us will ever get to see one!

Unless you have an intact hard drive, hardest thing is going to be able to find the operating system. I had a 3130 many moons ago, I do have backup QIC tapes labeled...

GL2-W3.6 3130
3130 Kernels

Don't know how viable the tapes are anymore

Seems like old qic tapes need to be rebuilt, but Im more than happy to do so. The previous owner was adamant on keeping the hdd because of NDA stuff.....I guess? Oh well. I have a few sources for the OS, but It wont be easy any way around it. I like a challenge!

Rebuilt, baked, tension bands boiled, tape guides lubricated, and/or covered in Tyvek to catch shedding tape material...
And the drives need to be cleaned, lubricated, and the capstan rubber rebuilt. There are a lot of challenges.

RE: Iris 3130
This is a bit of an obsession of mine... but when you have the 3130 booting, can you check the version of *flight* on it?

The reason I ask is that at some point NASA Langley Research Centre retired a 3130 with a particular modded version of *flight* that I've been trying to track down a copy of:

We are just about to retire a SGI 3130. I have a version of dog on that
machine that has the following vehicles:
X-Wing Fighter has lasers
Tie Fighter with Snoopy Pilot has lasers
Sopwith Camel with Snoopy Pilot
Folkner Tri-Plane with Snoopy Pilot
X-29
Klingon Battle Cruiser (ala the Original Star Trek) has Photon Torpedoes
and Phasers.

Plus the usual vehicles: P-38, F-16, F-15, etc.
I got this as an executable only. Wish I had source with all these neat
vehicles in it or at least an executable for a RISC base machine. Any chance
SGI could put these and other vehicles into the `normal' Dog? And how about
making the `world' a little bit bigger.

RE: Iris 3130
I think that's the same Brent Bates that I interacted with when he was working at Rogue Wave, at the time we were using Rogue Wave's PV Wave data visualization software on an Indy, and he was helping us by adding some additional features to that software that we were interested in. But this was a long time ago, like 25 years ago. Yeah, I know, I'm one of those old dudes... 😝

Project: Temporarily lost at sea
Plan: World domination! Or something...

@vishnu (love the Hit Girl avatar, btw). I did some googling last year, and I think he was working at the Langley FCU (Federal Credit Union) in 2019 as a sysadmin. I don't know if he's still there. I did send an email to his email address there, but never received a reply.
