IRIX diskless workstation: an alternative way.

RE: IRIX diskless workstation: an alternative way.
I have tried these diskless versions on Indy with no success:
5.3
6.2
6.5.0

It always gets stuck, really don't know why.

I even disabled NFS 3 (just NFS 2 enabled on NAS) but no luck.

Have you got an OpenBSD image to try to boot from? I would like to rule out network and NFS version problems.

Oh, sorry, I didn't notice your request. Did you maybe edit your post?

No, I don't have an image or tarball, but you can easily built an OpenBSD root FS yourself with my nfsrb2 tool. If you're running it on GNU/Linux you need to boot the diskless machine into single user mode the first time, so you can populate /dev. nfsrb2 prints out a commandline that shows how to do that. To boot in single user mode is different from arch to arch, but I believe for SGI machines you have to provide an extra "-" in front of the "-s" switch.

Yes, it's my fault, I edited the post.

Thanks to the previous error I had to work hard and find a solution for the Indy.

I have downloaded and analyzed the nfsrb2 tool and it might be interesting ... Thinking

RE: IRIX diskless workstation: an alternative way.
I'm pleased to see there's a lot of developments and discussion on this topic. One of the most interesting aspects of this I think would be setting up computers for vintage computer festivals. You just bring along a Master machine with enough storage and all of the images, serve them over a network and that way you don't have to worry about the noise from hard drives or the potential for a drive to be failed or for somebody to damage the installation that you might use on a daily basis.

Indeed, that is a killer application for this infrastructure.

I know, I'm always talking about running my machines diskless, so please don't mind if I bore someone, but I haven't yet found a machine that can't be operated diskless in my collection of machines. And running without legacy hardware like spinning rust saves you a lot of trouble. People are usually reluctant to create all the needed infrastructure for diskless operation and some developer people are always making sure you run into problems after OS upgrades on your infrastructure machines (NFSv2 not working by default, dependencies between daemons not correctly handled by systemd, etc.). But this Reanimator tool here seems to make it easy for interested people. And that's really good for the community.
