Some people have been asking for an alternative to patreon for donations since we had to get rid of PayPal. I have found another alternative in the form of Liberapay. It is not ready yet but it will be sooner or later; LiberaPay does not take a fee and works with major payment cards and banks. It's a pretty nice platform and I'm excited to be able to use them in the future.
As for why I don't currently have PayPal and probably won't in the future, it simply boils down to legislation in the US requiring them to collect KYC info, meaning legally personal info. This by itself is innocuous but because PayPal is neither a bank nor a credit union nor a credit card company it does not have quite as many regulations on it regarding storage of data and security of personal information. This is an example of laws in a country not being up to date to handle the modern internet. In general I'm already pretty hesitant to give out KYC.
One way we could potentially get around this in the future is to use a business for PayPal but that's not currently in the cards. Until then we are not going to be able to use PayPal or Venmo, because that's PayPal owned as well.
If anybody has any other suggested payment or donation processing companies that I should look into by all means, I am open to ideas.
I want to emphasize that in no way is it required to donate to us and that I highly appreciate the donors that do support us on a regular basis. Even if I had to pay everything out of my own pocket I absolutely could keep the site running indefinitely, but because of your support it has made it much easier for me to focus a lot more time on the website, and development.
