I'm looking for a way to send and receive emails from my SGI Indy. It runs IRIX 6.2. Has someone made an email client for this version of the OS that supports Google?

You will be unable to use Gmail with this likely. Google requires SSL or STARTTLS, these are well and truly beyond 6.2's lifespan as a product.

Porting one to IRIX 6.2 is a bit more difficult
No thunderbird, no Sylpheed.

I was prepared for that. In that case, could I create a custom mail server with a unique domain name that doesn't require all that stuff? I had an idea to make my own server and client that allows SGI machines to exchange email with each other.

I thought of the same thing. There is one Webmail program that would be reasonably usable on even early Mozilla and Netscape and that is squirrelmail.

If there was a significant demand I would consider setting up an email server and offering email addresses for a small one time fee.

If there are others like yourself who are interested I can give it a shot sometime

There may be an old version of Netscape Navigator 4.7 that still runs on IRIX 6.2 and includes a version of Netscape Mail with IMAP support. GMail talks IMAP. Not without SSL.

If you give up on Google and use oldskool POP then there's always MediaMail which comes with IRIX. MediaMail is a derivative of ZMail. ZMail itself runs on IRIX as well, but requires a license.

All of this is seriously old and probably full of security issues. You should really question yourself if you want to do this in the first place.

Yeah this is why I suggested a webmail route instead. I'm not confident that without a lot of funding that much 6.2 or 5.3 compatible development is going to happen for a long time due to the primitiveness of the operating system in those versions and especially compiler limitations even worse than IRIX 6.5
