Octane SE graphics -> V6 troubleshooting
Hi all. I am looking to upgrade my late model Octane from its SE graphics to V6 graphics. I have the following:
- Xbox 1.4
- PROM 4.17
- IRIX 6.5.22f
- Cherokee power supply
- R12000 400MHz

As I thought those were meeting all the prerequisites, I removed the SE card and put in the V6 card.

After powering on, I get proper video, but during "running diagnostics", I get a red light. After the diagnostics are done, the light goes back to white. I get the "starting up the system" message, but the screen appears to freeze after that -- though I can see the HD light going, which leads me to believe it's continuing with the boot, but the graphics just get immediately frozen.

Thoughts on what to try next? Is there more info to get during that diagnostics at startup via serial port? Am I potentially missing software that's not installed? Or does this possibly sound like a h/w issue with the V6 board?

I went into the maintenance menu, ran the diagnostics there, and it didn't say anything of interest, other than it was unable to test Odyssey graphics and to use a cmd line tool.

After the machine potentially boots, I hit the power button, the red and white light start alternately flashing, which then leads to a shutdown/power down.

Much appreciate any help you can offer!   Jesse

Hey bud, you're going to have to install the VPro drivers.

Boot into the miniroot and it's something like:

keep *
install stale
go

I'm pretty sure there's a post on here about it.

Ian Mapleson wrote a guide on how to do it, you'll find it on his sgidepot website.

Thanks -- is this the link you were referring to? (I couldn't find anything more specific about installing VPro software)
Installing IRIX 6.5
http://sgidepot.co.uk/6.5inst.html

I found this other post which covers what I'm looking to do:
http://forums.irixnet.org/thread-117.html

Though regarding booting to miniroot, I don't have a SCSI CDROM -- suggested alternative? I've got a linux machine, Raspberry Pi, SCSI2SD.

Or can I use the "Install System Software" option and then install over a network connection?

Sorry for the basic questions, I'm just getting into working on the Octane. Previous owner had freshly installed 6.5.22f.

RE: Octane SE graphics -> V6 troubleshooting
The magic command is "install hardware". From inside 'inst', that is. So:
  1. Make sure you select all sources (CDs) with files that will change using 'from'. That's at least the overlays and foundation discs (for 6.5).
  2. Then:
    Code:
    keep *
    install hardware
  3. Resolve conflicts (if any), and 'go'.
If you get a ton of conflicts you didn't select all necessary installation discs.

RE: Octane SE graphics -> V6 troubleshooting
Three years later, and I've dusted off the Octane to try getting this V6 graphics card working again! Still having trouble sadly. I would really appreciate any help.

Current system is 6.5.22f installed by prior owner.

I followed the Ian steps:
From 6.5 Foundation 1:
cp eoe* x_eoe* /usr/local/gfx

From 6.5.22 Installation Tools and Overlays 1 of 3:
cp eoe_6522m* x_eoe_6522m* /usr/local/gfx

Then reboot with keyboard disconnected, and null modem serial (9600 N81)
Go to single user mode (5 Enter Command Monitor, single)

inst
1
/usr/local/gfx
keep *
i eoe.sw.gfx
i eoe.sw64.gfx
i x_eoe.sw.Server
i x_eoe.sw.eoe
i x_eoe.sw64.eoe
go
quit

Then rebooted. This all seemed to work fine, but the results are the same. Graphics display and I get "The system is starting up." but the mouse cursor appears to freeze. However, Irix still boots behind the scenes, it looks like the system boots normally. If I login via serial console, and shutdown, the graphics and mouse movement eventually return and say something like the system is shutdown.

I've also tried similar steps to the above but with:
inst
1
/usr/local/gfx
keep *
install hardware
(conflicts 1b if slip wants uucp)
go
quit
reboot

questions:
(1) is this an acceptable way to get the graphics system installed for V6, using serial console and single user mode?
(2) anything wrong with my steps?
(3) how can I confirm the graphics drivers were installed? it doesn't seem like they were.
(4) running 6.5.22f but using install files 6.5.22m -- is this fine?
(5) is it possible that X is trying to run in a resolution or refresh rate that my monitor doesn't support? (Samsung SyncMaster 206BW, 75Hz max refresh, 1680x1050)

I should also add, I get "diagnostics failed." on boot, so maybe it's a V6 hardware issue. When I run diagnostics, everything is fine but it's unable to test Odyssey and says to use odyssey diags which I don't have. I'm getting a V8 in a week or two so I can also test that.

Thanks for any help you can offer!

Are you willing to do a complete reinstall and see if that fixes it?

yeah getting to that point as I’m not sure what else to try. I’ll first experiment with “install stale” and see if that does anything.

RE: Octane SE graphics -> V6 troubleshooting
I borked the system messing around. Ended up using love to do a 6.5.30 net install via Linux per the love guide, worked great!

Had one issue with cacheline write error but did

Code:
setenv console d

And that seemed to make the error go away (?!)
This was an install via serial console.

Now I get graphics on the login screen but my monitor is flickering. May be at too high a refresh rate. But good progress.
