I feel like I should know what these are. Photo from the Army Research Lab, Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller?

Which part are you wondering about?  Those are six SGI Challenge XL racks running down the right side.  I'm assuming that's what you're trying to identify.  (There's also an Indigo2 on the desk, but I suspect you know that.)

And the Gandalf racks are either modems or terminal adapters:  see Gandalf Technologies at Wikipedia.  Gandalf modems were common when I was at university in the early- to mid-1990s.

SGI:  Indigo, Indigo2, Octane, Origin 300
Sun:  SPARCstation 20 (x4), Ultra 2, Blade 2500, T5240
HP:  9000/380, 425e, C8000
Digital: DECstation 5000/125, PWS 600au

RE: what are these?
The logo on the door seems to be (pre-R10K) Power Challenge. The third one from the back looks a bit odd though (display position, white label on lower door).
