Restore monitor res in command prom

Re: Restore monitor res in command prom
All attempts in single user mode have failed. When I setmon, Irix returns the set resolution as “presumed invalid”. Can someone send me a valid 1280x1024_60 vfo for an octane mxe.

What resolution were you originally running?

use the following command to find out what vfo's are on your system:

Code:
find /usr/gfx | grep vfo

Re: Restore monitor res in command prom
I gave up trying to fix the res. I ended up reinstalling IRIX onto a clean hard drive (My CD-Rom behaved for once). I inserted the old IRIX system hard drive into the octane and copied / replaced all the files from the /usr/gfx/... location in hope it would replace any 'bad' files. Rebooted with the old hard drive and didnt work. Perhaps the actual setup environment information is stored somewhere else. If I knew where, i can try replacing that file.

I may just cut my losses and retire the old system drive into a data drive. Besides, I already reinstalled all my applications/liceses onto the new IRIX install and everything is working good.

Originally 1280x1024_60, then I tried switching to 1600x1200 to see how it fits on the wide screen display, I didnt like it as the image was not as sharp as the lower res, so I (thought) I switched back to 1280x1024_60 (bottom of the 'display properties' list), clicked on 'make new display default', logged out and thats when I got the "out of range" message.

I'm glad you got it sorted out!

Some of the graphics systems store the resolution settings within their firmware, this is possibly also true for the Octane. (A short story of how I discovered this follows:)

I found this out when I first started playing around with my Onyx2. It wouldn't display within the limits of my screen, when I tried to run it with two raster managers installed, however it displayed perfectly at 1280x1024_60 with one raster manager installed. I tested both raster managers, and they both worked! (I initially thought it was a problem with the DG5-2, so I ordered in a DG5-8, which didn't solve the problem)

I couldn't solve the problem by logging in via serial either, as whenever I tried to change the graphics settings, it told me that that wasn't possible, as X wasn't running, as the machine was running in a headless (non graphical) mode.

Reinstalling IRIX didn't help either!

It turned out that it only displayed at the large resolution, when the resolution settings on both raster managers were the same as they were when it was previously setup.

To overcome this problem, I had to boot the machine with only one raster manager installed and change the resolution to a resolution that wasn't compatible with my monitor (I think I set it to 1920x1080_60), which then differed from the settings in the second raster manager, which remained unchanged. I then shut the machine down and inserted the second raster manager.

In the case of the Infinite reality system, if the resolutions set in the firmware of the two raster managers differs from that which the graphics system expects, it defaults to an output of 1280x1024_60! (This solved my problem!)

Thanks again to @jebmayers who helped me solve this problem!

"ireeprom" from a serial console would have solved this ... the option to wipe and re-initialize.

My own Onyx2 came from a truck simulator with a bunch of projectors attached to it, so I had nothing that could deal with the screen formats it was using.

Re: Restore monitor res in command prom
Thanks Jan, I’ll sure take note of this, should I face this problem again in the future.

Could you please share the exact commands you issue to the ireeprom, so that others can fix the problem, should they encounter it in the future.

My Onyx2 was from a flight simulator in Israel, therefore it would have also originally have had projectors linked to it.
