IRIX -- how to get a serial device?
Ok guys, my knowledge of IRIX is breaking down atm.

I've got an HPE server I'm trying to serial into to reset the iLo, but that's not the important part. The important part is currently I have an Octane2 with me, and it's my only device with a serial port. I need to make a baud 9600 connection but the techpubs docs are failing me.

I've got a serial cable put in at the second serial port, and the other end is in my HPE server. I have tried:

screen -s 9600 /dev/ttyf2

Nothing. Doesn't work. Says no device/PTY. Did the same with cu, same result.

I tried setting up a terminal device from the system manager, and on reboot this put a /dev/tport device in my dev dir, and I tried that. No dice.

What am I doing wrong? Is there a config file for this so I can avoid the sysmgr shit?

Try screen -L /dev/tty(whatever) 9600 - and and the risk of being obvious a serial cable won't work, it has to be an actual null modem cable.

That's not what I'm asking

What are the serial device names that I need to use?

Oh, shoot, well since you're on bsd and I'm on linux I guess I don't know, on mine I've always used minicom -D /dev/ttyS0

No that's not what I'm asking.

I'm sorry to sound like a broken record but I'm in a place with only a laptop that has no serial port and my octane. I do not currently have a USB serial adapter.

I would like to use the octane as a serial terminal to the server. I have a nine pin null modem cable from serial port 2 on the octane

What is the device number that IRIX uses for serial ports?

Okay, and you've tried ttyd2 and ttym2 as well with no result?

Okay, that's weird, and you're using xterm to try to connect? xterm is a valid terminal emulator...

No, I use screen and cu

I'm not sure how to use xterm to open a serial connection
