Joerg Schilling has died.

For those who are not aware of Joerg and his contributions he helped me port smake and star to IRIX and was incredibly helpful, kind and friendly on numerous occasions we bumped into each other on the internet over the years.

He has been one of my idols for his incredible talents, his contributions to avoiding the GNU monoculture, and his amazingly good smake, star (a GNU tar alternative) and such.

That's terrible, I had no idea he was sick! The poor guy had to undergo years of FUD for cdrecord. Fortunately since I've always used Slackware, and Pat Volkerding, genius that he  is easily saw through the FUD and never shipped with any of the dreck people were trying to depose cdrecord with. This is really sad, I hope he had a succession plan in place for cdrecord. Some of you may remember when Pat Volkerding had a pretty bad health scare a few years ago, he's had a succession plan in place ever since.

I hope so.

Cdrtools is great. I see Jorg and he s struggles with recognition as similar to my own. We are both historically opinionated yo a large degree.

I see a lot of the same sort of thing with distributions refusing to use xscreensaver, because it's not GPL, so they've created a variety of their own buggy insecure screensavers. I never saw anything that Joerg wrote regarding the FUD aimed at cdrtools that wasn't perfectly well reasoned, and, more to the point, correct.

Unfortunately, I never met him personally and now regret it. I liked his comments on monoculture, among GNU stuff.

"Er möge in Frieden ruhen!" (R.I.P.), like you would say in German.

A loss indeed.

But I think Nekochan's "Joerg" aka "jobeh" is alive and well ;-)

Late to this thread, but I'll definitely pour one out. Joerg was a genius, rebel, and great guy. RIP, buddy.

I think Jörg understood more about the SCSI protocol than the programmers who actually developed it.
